We should all be trying to reduce waste, and disposable makeup removal pads are very wasteful. So, here’s a tutorial for making your own DIY facial rounds so you can do your part for the environment. It’s also a great way of reusing old towels and keeping them out of landfills as well.

There’s a bonus to this tutorial – an easy summer makeup look!

1. Create your facial rounds template

On a piece of paper, trace the size of the makeup remover pad you want, adding a ¼-inch seam allowance all around. Cut out the round.

Now fold that round in half, and trace it onto the paper, also adding a ¼-inch seam allowance to the straight edge only. Cut the half-round out.

2. Cut your fabric

Trace the full round onto your towel fabric as many times as rounds you want to make.

Trace the half-rounds onto your flannel fabric as many times as rounds you want to make. You will need twice as many half-rounds as full-rounds.

Tip: the flannel is not as thick as the towel, so you might get away with just tracing a couple of half-rounds and folding the fabric a few times to cut, so you are cutting multiple half-rounds at a time.

3. Assemble the DIY facial rounds

Take a flannel half-round and fold it on the ¼-inch seam allowance. Place it on a towel round with the folded bit on the outside and in the middle of the round.

Placing fabric pieces on top of each other

Place another flannel half-round on top of the full circle, without folding it at the seam allowance.

The straight edge of the second flannel half-round will overlap the straight edge of the first flannel half-round.

Sewing the reusable facial rounds

Sew the facial round at ¼-inch all the way around the circumference.

Now turn the makeup round right-side out through the center flannel opening.

Sewing the flap closed

Make sure the back center is folded flat, and then sew the flap closed along the edge of the fold.

4. Get ready for makeup or go makeup-free!

Remove your makeup with your new reusable makeup pads, and cleanse your face well, either with soap and water or with a cleanser.

Apply some moisturizer and lip balm, and you could go out just like that!

5. Easy makeup tutorial

Apply a light concealer under your eyes and below your nose if you need it. Blend the concealer in with a blending brush.

Setting the concealer with face powder

Set the concealer with some face powder.

Applying eyeliner to the upper waterline

Apply eyeliner under the edge of your upper eyelid. This will really open up your eyes, but because it’s underneath it won’t smudge if you rub your eyes.

Applying clear lash gel to eyebrows

Apply a clear lash gel to your eyebrows to give them some definition.

Applying blush to the cheeks

Add powder blush to your cheekbones to get a nice sun-kissed glow.

Applying lipstick with a finger

Use a bold lip liner and follow with a bold lipstick that you smooth out with your fingertip.

Applying brown eyeshadow

Finish with a cocoa eyeshadow on your eyelids.
