What is a loofah?

A loofah is a sponge that is made out of a gourd. The skin is very rough and the flesh inside is soft. It has pores that are bigger than other sponges to allow for more water retention. It also has seeds, which can be used to grow new loofahs! They are sold as a vegetable in some countries.

In this country, the loofah is typically dried and used as a sponge in projects like DIY loofah soap.

How do you make homemade loofah soap?

Chop up the soap base and place it in a heat-safe container. Heat in the microwave on high for 30 seconds, remove, and stir. Heat for additional 30-second increments, stirring between each heating session, until fully melted.

Then, add 10-15 drops of essential oil or a blend of oils to your melted soap base. Once you’ve added the essential oils, mix the liquid glycerin melt and pour soap base carefully.

Cut your loofah sponges down to size by slicing them in quarters, depending on how big you want your loofah soap bars to be. Place one loofah slice into each mold cavity. Pour the melted soap over loofah to fill the mold.

Make sure the loofah is covered completely by pushing it down slightly. Then, carefully spoon more melted soap onto the top of your loofah until all of it is completely submerged.

Finally, carefully spoon the rest of your clear melt and pour soap base into your mold to surround your loofah with clear soap liquid. Allow it to sit for two hours and remove it from the mold.

This DIY loofah soap makes a wonderful exfoliating body bar that will leave you feeling like you’ve had a professional spa treatment. You can make this recipe using your favorite essential oils, so be sure to experiment with different scents!
