Do you need a good matte top coat, but don’t have one at home? Do you want the classy, matte nail look but you only have glossy polish?


In this DIY matte top coat tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make your own matte top coat so you can have great nails without taking a trip out to the store. Let’s get started!

Tools and materials:

  • Nail polish
  • Clear nail polish
  • Cornstarch
  • Paper or funnel

1. Apply nail polish

Before we get started on the DIY matte top coat, start by finishing your nail look, whether it’s a simple layer of polish or an intricate design.

2. Ready your cornstarch

The main ingredient for this tutorial is cornstarch, so portion out as much of it as you’ll need, depending on the size of your bottle.


I laid mine out on a piece of paper so I can wrap it into a funnel for easier transferring, but use whatever you have at your disposal.

3. Add the cornstarch to the nail polish

4. Mix

Now, we mix. To do this, close up the bottle tightly and roll it between your palms. It should look a bit cloudy when mixed properly.

5. Apply

Apply your new DIY matte top coat onto your nails and let dry
