If the ingredient list on store-bought mouthwash turns you off, then this DIY mouthwash might make you much happier. This all-natural mouthwash is safe, non-toxic, and promotes oral health.
Follow along with this tutorial to learn how to make mouthwash at home, and to understand the ingredients you will use.
Tools and materials:
- Distilled water
- Coconut oil
- Peppermint essential oil
- Spearmint essential oil
- Himalayan pink salt (ground)
- Baking soda
- Xylitol
- Glass container with lid
- Measuring spoons
- Measuring cup
You will get enough ingredients for a large quantity of mouthwash so consider buying them with friends and splitting it up. You’ll still have enough for several batches!
Xylitol
The only ingredient here that sounds remotely chemical is xylitol. But, in fact, xylitol is a natural sugar alcohol that is found in plants, including many fruits and vegetables.
Besides being a common sweetener, xylitol enhances the mineralization of tooth enamel and that helps prevent tooth decay.
Essential oils
Not all essential oils are safe to ingest, so when you are buying essential oil for this DIY mouthwash, check that yours can be ingested.
This recipe uses both peppermint and spearmint essential oil because they each have unique properties. Peppermint eliminates bad breath, fights off bad germs, and decreases dental plaque.
Spearmint also cleans your mouth and promotes fresh breath, but it also aids digestion.
Himalayan pink salt
Himalayan pink salt contains more than 80 essential minerals and has antimicrobial, antibacterial, and antifungal properties.
Coconut oil
You might think that coconut oil is a strange ingredient in mouthwash, but, in fact, it also has antibacterial, antiviral, and antimicrobial properties.
Baking soda
Baking soda is added to this homemade mouthwash because it neutralizes acid.
Distilled water
The distilled water gives you the cleanest mouthwash because of its lack of minerals, which are common in tap water. If you don’t have distilled water, then filtered water is the second-best option.
