In this nail tutorial, I’m going to show you a nude and black nail design with gel polish. I’m going to be painting with both my dominant and non-dominant hands.

Painting with your non-dominant hand can be tricky, so I picked a really simple design that wouldn’t be too challenging. I want to show that if you pick a simple enough design, you can make it look great on both hands.

Tools and materials:

  • Black gel polish
  • Liner brush
  • Clean-up brush
  • Protein bond
  • Topcoat
  • Cuticle oil
Painting nails

1. Paint nails

File and shape your nails. Then start the design by painting a straight line down your middle finger.

We are creating a mirror image design. So, if you imagine that this straight line is the mirror line, the design on the ring finger and baby finger will mirror the design of the index finger and thumb.

On your index finger, draw a line in the center from the top but stop halfway down the nail.

Then curve it off toward the side nearest your thumb. Proceed to fill in this section by painting straight lines in an up-and-down motion.

You can use a clean-up brush to clean up any mistakes and smooth the design. This works because we’re using a gel polish instead of regular nail polish, which doesn’t set as quickly.

One of the reasons I like working with gel polish is if it doesn't look right, you can just spray your nail with some alcohol and easily start over.

Paint your ring finger, which mirrors the design on your index finger. Paint a line in the center from the top but stop halfway down the nail.

Then curve it off toward the side nearest your baby finger. Proceed to fill in this section by painting straight lines in an up-and-down motion.

Now on both the ring finger and index finger, draw a line next to the filled-in section.

This line should be nice and thin and go about ⅔ of the way down the nail.

The thumb and the baby finger have the same design as the middle finger. Just draw a straight line down the middle of the nail all the way down.

Repeat the same process on your other hand, where you will be painting with your non-dominant hand.

This can be tricky, so the most important thing is to go slow and steady, don’t rush just take your time.

Also, use your clean-up brush to make it nice and neat. Sometimes you might also have to stabilize the hand you are painting by sitting your fingers on something, so it doesn’t wobble about.

Applying protein bond

2. Apply protein bond

I often find that the top gel coat lifts off and starts to peel away from the nail. I’m not sure if this is because I buff my nails too smooth or it’s just the nature of gel polish.

However, one solution to this that I’ve found works very well is to apply a protein bond before you do a top coat.

Applying cuticle oil

3. Apply cuticle oil

Finish off by applying cuticle oil.

You need to make sure you're rehydrating your skin after you use these products because they have chemicals in them which can be drying.

I recommend using cuticle oil daily to keep that area of your hands healthy and moisturized.

Here's the final look. It is a simple yet elegant design. The three tips I have for you as far as working on your working with your non-dominant hand are to take your time, don't be too hard on yourself, and use a clean-up brush.

Doing these things, you will definitely be able to get the look you want!

Let me know any other tips that you have for painting nails with your non-dominant hand that I may have missed.

The reason your top coat is peeling off is because gel needs texture or a sticky layer to stick to. That is why protein bond keeps the top coat on is because it is slightly sticky. If you buff your nails to smooth gel polish doesn't like smooth.😊
