When it comes to lip balms we can split people into two categories - “lip balm lovers” - that always carry one with them and use it several times a day or at least once. The other category - “never used one” - doesn’t know what lip balm is as their lips never get dry.

I belong to the first category and sometimes I feel it’s a kind of obsession. I never go to sleep without lip balm on my lips. Whenever we travel I have to take my lip balm with me! So you can find it in places you would never expect like my car, skiing rucksack, swimming bag, or all my jacket pockets that have zippers.

On the contrary, my husband never needs one. He doesn’t understand my obsession as his lips simply never get dry...

One would expect that when you apply so much moisture and nutrition to your lips they will appear bigger and full but as you know this effect can be accomplished with other tools:)

how to make diy lip balm

If you belong to the "lip balm lover" category, you want to learn how to make DIY lip balm. Most commercially sold lip balms contain ingredients that aren't beneficial for your lips. I just randomly checked the main ingredients in Chapstick - a well-known brand of lip balm. As the main active ingredient is stated as white Petrolatum

Doctor Mercola on petrolatum: “These petroleum products coat the skin like plastic – clogging pores and creating a build-up of toxins. They can disrupt hormonal activity. When you think about black oil pumped from deep underground, ask yourself why you'd want to put that kind of stuff on your skin”

When you regularly expose your body to toxins ( all kinds of toxins even in the air, in your food, by taking prescription drugs etc) you overwhelm your liver and your body will have a harder time getting rid of and filtering these toxins.

As a consequence we get sick. It’s really hard to change the air you breathe but it’s quite easy to change your lip balm.

Benefits of lip balm

  1. Making your own lip balm with rose petals has many advantages starting with the selection of ingredients you really like and are approved as being excellent and safe to use on your lips (or skin)
  2. lip balm homemade is very cost-effective especially if you make a large number of pieces in one batch.

  • Lavender essential oil
  • Lime essential oil
  • Grapefruit essential oil
  • vanilla extract
  • peppermint essential oil
  1. rose petal lip balm deserves little bit red or pinkish color and making tinted lip balms using natural colorants is a fun. Mix and match following powders using trial and error till you get your desired color
  • Rose powder makes natural pinkish color
  • Beetroot powder makes various shades of red color
  • Cocoa powder makes it brownish
  • Alkanet root powder going more toward red
  • Madder root powder - shades of brown
  1. Reuseing old lip balm tubes or containers is more environmentally friendly
  2. Create an original DIY gift with rose petal lip balm that will be greatly appreciated. For that purpose, I suggest buying a new container.

Nourishing and scented Rose infused oil is made by maceration of rose petals in a carrier oil. I used pure Grapeseed Oil as my carrier oil as it protects the skin from free radicals (vitamins E, C, and D) and is also a great moisturizer.

If you don’t have rose infused oil at hand use just pure carrier oil like grapeseed oil or almond oil.

Beeswax has many healing properties and acts also as a preserving agent. Beeswax contains vitamin A that supports cell reconstruction and protection of the lips.

Coconut oil - is an excellent choice for cracked and dry lips. It increases hydration and reduces water loss in dry skin. Coconut oil applied on the lips adds moisture and gives them a shine

Castor oil will make your lips smooth and glossy

Rose essential oil is very often used in expensive cosmetic products for its strong odor of roses and its antioxidant activity that spurs on the healing processes of the skin.

First step - making rose oil

If you have rose infused oil at your disposal you can skip this step.

Start with rose oil, actually start with roses. To make a high quality scented rose oil, you will need organic rose petals. Thus don’t get them at the florist shop or from public parks as these are already treated with chemicals. The best way is to collect them in your garden or anywhere else you are sure they are at organic quality.

Dry rose petals first before infusing them in a carrier oil. I have used grapeseed oil as my carrier oil as it is an excellent moisturizer. You can also reach for coconut oil, olive oil, almond, or jojoba.

Use a sterilized jar filled with one-half cup of dried herbs. Pour over 1 cup of carrier oil, so all petals are submerged fully in the oil. Place the pot with rose petals and carrier oil in a double boiler and slowly bring it to simmer. Use a thermometer to check the temperature as it should not exceed 50 C (122 F). Let it simmer for 5-6 hours. Then remove the oil from the heat, fill it with the second batch of rose petals and repeat the process as many times till the oil takes on the color and the scent. Depending on the roses it can be 3x, 5x to 8x. I repeat it 3 times to achieve the desired scent.

Once you are happy with the final scent, remove the rose oil from the heat and allow it to cool. Strain the petals through cheesecloth. Now you have the rose oil that you can use to make diy rose lip balm or other projects such as rose cream or rose soap.

how to make lip balm without beeswaxWhile I love making homemade lip balms it is always better to have alternatives. The best replacement for beeswax is candelilla wax that is pure vegetable wax found the in leaves of the candelilla shrub. It is a bit harder though than beeswax but has excellent moisturizing and nourishing properties.
