5 Materials
15 Minutes

In this sewing tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make a little black dress from a pair of stretchy black pants. We are going to completely transform a pair of exercise pants and make a cute dress out of them. Let's get started!

Tools and materials:

  • Stretchy black pants
  • Dress
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
Large exercise pants before the DIY

Make sure you use quite a large pair of pants (that might be a number of sizes bigger than the pants that you’d actually wear) to ensure that you have enough material to work with.

Cutting the pants

1. Cut the pants

Turn your pants inside out and fold them. Then, to create the pattern, use a mini dress that you already have.

Fold the dress in half and place it on the pants so that the center of the dress is on the outer side of the pants (away from the crotch area). Cut around the dress.

Opening out the pants fabric

Now open the pants up, and you will have two pieces, one for the front and one for the back of your dress.

Cutting the neckline for the dress

2. Cut the neckline

Take one of the pieces that will be the front of your dress. Fold it, as well as your template dress in half cut out the neckline.

Pinning the dress pattern ready to sew

3. Pin and sew

Place the two pieces one on top of the other with the right sides together, and pin all around the edge. Then sew using a zigzag or overlock stitch.

4. Finish off the raw edges

Lastly, finish off the raw edges of the neckline, armholes, and around the bottom of the dress. To do this, fold over the material and pin it, and then sew using a zigzag stitch.
