So, grab your sewing machine and materials, and let’s get this t-shirt into dress tutorial underway!

Tools and materials:

Tracing the shape of a dress that fits well

1. Make the pattern

Lay your t-shirt out on a flat surface. Then, grab your best-fitting dress and place it over the t-shirt. With a marker or chalk, trace the shape of the dress onto the shirt.

For the top part, make a line straight across; you’ll need to figure out how high or low you want it to be.

4. Make the ruffles

From the remaining fabric, cut out three long strips.

Then, sew them together at the short ends, so you land up with one long piece of fabric.

Sewing a ruffle for the dress

Fold the strip in half and sew along the edges.

Pull the thread to make a cute ruffled effect.

5. Attach the ruffles

Align the ruffles to the bottom of your shirt. Oh, wait, excuse me, I mean, to the bottom of your dress! Pin all around and then sew to secure.

Hemming the top of the dress

6. Hem the top

Flip your dress right sides out, fold the top part inside, and stitch the fold to create a perfect hem.

Making a skinny belt out of the leftover t-shirt fabric

7. Make a skinny belt (optional)

This step is optional, and honestly, I probably would have gone without the belt in hindsight.

But if you want a belt, basically cut out a long thin piece of fabric. Then, pull on the t-shirt fabric, so it curls up and becomes string-like.

Lastly, tie the ends, and you now have yourself a skinny belt.
