Before eyeliner hack

1. Apply eyebrow gel, brush and fill

Eyebrows are such an important component of any eye makeup look, especially if you have less lid space. Start by completely saturating your eyebrows with clear, brow gel.

Applying brow gel

Then use a spoolie brush to push your brow hair all the way up for that feathered out effect.

Brushing brows

Then run the spoolie along the top edge to clean up the line.

Then use an eyebrow pencil to fill in any sparse areas. Don’t overdo this to allow this eye makeup look to feel light, without weighing down your lids.

2. Even out the skin tone

Either using concealer or eyeshadow primer, even out the skin tone under your brows. Doing this will give you more flexibility by potentially increasing the lid space.

3. Define the crease and lower lash lines

Blend out an eyeshadow shade that’s slightly darker than your natural skin tone into the socket area of your eyelid as well as the outer corner.

Softly blend as you add more of the eyeshadow to contour the lid space, giving the illusion of a larger area.

Defining eye crease

Apply the same color on a smaller brush to define your lower lash lines as well.

Then soften it with a small, blending brush.

4. Add sparkle

This step is optional but I’m adding sparkly eyeshadow in the center of my eyelids. Then gently spread it out with your finger.

You can skip right to the eyeliner steps, but I gave these first steps so that I could show you a full, eye makeup look to brighten your eyes.

5. Start your wing under your lower lash line

Apply black eyeshadow to an angled brush. Make a mark slightly below your lower lash line and about a quarter of the way under the length of your eye.

Creating a wing

Go parallel to your lash line and take the eyeshadow all the way to the outer corner and extend it just beyond the outer corner.

Creating a wing

6. Draw the wing from the top lash line and shade in

Join this to your top lash line. This creates a wing shape that does not interfere with the fold of a hooded eye.

Creating a wing

Lightly shade that wing inward.

Then use a small, detail brush to shade in the lower lash line in the gap that you left, dragging it across, almost to the inner corner. Then soften this up with a dry, blending brush.

7. Line your top lash line

Taking a bit more of the black eye shadow, line your top lash line very close to the lashes and connect it to the wing.

8. Apply white eyeliner inside the wing

Now is when the magic happens! Use a white or nude eyeliner to fill in the wing and all the way to your lower, waterline in the outer half.

This gives the illusion of extending the white portion of your eye, making your eyes look bigger, brighter and elongated.

9. Lift your lashes

Use an eyelash curler to lift your lashes.

10. Apply mascara

Apply a coat of mascara. You can also add false lashes if you prefer, but make sure you choose a kind that wings out to help disguise hooded eyes. They should also be wispy so they don’t cover up your lid space.
