Today, I’m going to show you three ways to apply eyeshadow for hooded eyes. I have hooded eyes as well, so these methods work for me, but it’s important to know that every technique is not going to work for everyone.

There are so many different types and severities of hoods, so my crease and outer V might not look like yours. That said, I think these three techniques are pretty universal.

So, if you’re in need of ideas for makeup for hooded eyes, keep reading.

Tools and materials:

  • Matte eyeshadow
  • Glittery eyeshadow
  • Makeup brushes
  • Mascara

Makeup look 1

Applying a shimmery eyeshadow to lids

1. Apply light shimmery color to lids

First, take a shimmery light shadow and apply it all over your lid. I like to go even higher than my crease as the shimmering shadow doesn’t show up as much.

I like the shimmery shadow as opposed to the matte because I don’t have to be as sharp or precise and it bounces the light in different ways. Apply the bulk of the shadow to the center of your lid.

2. Apply matte color to lids

Next, take a matte color and apply it over the shimmery shadow in windshield wiper motions. The matte shadow will sort of push the hood back and the shimmery one will bring the mobile lid up.

Even if your mobile lid isn’t visible while resting, when talking or moving your eyes, you’ll be able to see the sparkle coming through.

If you have hooded eyes, you’ll have this crease coming out from your nose, so follow that as a guide to know how high you need to go.

Applying eyeshadow to the lower lash line

3. Apply shadow to the lower lash line

Use a pencil brush to apply that same matte eyeshadow from before on your lower lash line.

Blending the eyeshadow

4. Blend out the eyeshadow

Blend out the eyeshadow so there are no harsh lines.

Applying a mid-tone eyeshadow to the lid

1. Apply a mid-tone to your lid

This look is very, very easy. Start by taking a mid-tone - I’m going with a mauve color. Press this color in quite well by tapping and rubbing it into your lid, concentrating specifically on the mobile lid.

Take the color all up the way to the crease that comes out from your nose. Don’t go too low; just stop wherever your eyebrow is finished.

Building up the color intensity

You can leave it like this or build it up around your mobile lid and buff it out with what’s left. I like my eyeshadow to be quite intense, so that’s what I’m going to do.

2. Apply the mid-tone to your lower lash line

Then, take a pencil brush and apply that same color to your lower lash line.

I love this eyeshadow for hooded eyes because you’re using a dark color, which means you’re pushing everything away and hiding in the hood.

Easy hooded eye makeup look

That’s the second hooded eye makeup look done. Just add some mascara and maybe a thin liner in your waterline, and you’re done!

Eyeliner for hooded eyes is quite difficult to do, so I very rarely do it, but you should do what works for your eyes.

Applying sparkly eyeshadow with fingers

1. Apply sparkly eyeshadow

For this look, we’re going to expand on the one we just did. This is great if you want to add some sparkle.

Even if you have hooded eyes, you can add sparkle because it’ll show when you’re moving, talking, or blinking, even though it might not show when your face is at rest.

To do this, take a sparkly eye shadow that is similar in tone to the eyeshadow you already have on, so it looks good and it’s cohesive. Just dab it onto your eyelid with your finger.

Adding sparkly eyeshadow to an otherwise matte look really brightens up your eyes and makes them more interesting.
