Get the Mountain Girl Look for Fall

I moved to Colorado a few years ago, and since then, my style has evolved to align with the mountain surroundings. But what is the mountain girl look? Mountain style is between boho and western but has feminine touches and ready-for-any-weather ruggedness.

This style choice incorporates timeless American classics such as denim, leather and flannel and prints such as plaid, Aztec and vintage-style florals. It speaks to those who crave the outdoors but also enjoy cozying up in a cabin. This look is meant to take you through the day, whether you’re going into town to the market or out on a trailhead at the ranch.

When dressing mountain girl style, plan for lots of layers for temperatures that can vary wildly from the plains to the high elevations but that gives you more opportunities to have fun mixing textures and prints in a way that appears as carefree as the American spirit but has a style all its own!

Here’s how to get the mountain girl look:

Denim Skirt and Embroidered Velvet Jacket

The mountain girl look is all about mixing textures. So combining the tough look of denim with softer touches of velvet, suede, faux fur and embroidery is the perfect way to capture the unique charm of living the high life in the mountains. I paired a denim midi-skirt with a black velvet embroidered jacket that just gives those boho-western vibes. Finish off the look with accessories such as cowboy boots, a tooled leather belt with a western buckle and a floppy wide-brim hat. Shop embroidered velvet jacket.

Shacket and Jeans

The shacket is a term that became popular over the past few years for a clothing item that falls somewhere between a shirt and a jacket. It’s usually designed in heavy fabrics such as flannel, wool, denim or corduroy. You often see them resembling a plaid flannel shirt but with more substantial weight or a lining. The shacket length can go either shirt-length or longer to appear more coat-like. A shacket is a great option for the mountain girl look and is perfect for fall. Layer it over a t-shirt or a sweater as the temperatures change and throw on a pair of trusty blue jeans and knee-high leather boots. Add a leather belt with some personality and don’t forget your wide-brim hat to finish the look. Shop shacket.

Vintage Dress and Corduroy Jacket

Vintage-style florals seem to go perfectly with the mountain girl look, again bringing in that feminine touch to mix with harder elements. Look for a vintage dress in fall colors and pair it with a corduroy jacket for the perfect autumnal look. Finish it off with a wide-brim hat and short cowboy booties for a playful look perfect for fall festivals. Shop corduroy jacket.

Now that you know how to dress mountain girl style, will you try it?
