If you have wrinkles, fine lines, or hooded eyes, using shimmer eyeshadows might be somewhat of a challenge. Shimmery eyes are perfect for the holiday season, so don’t let your skin and eye type force you to give that up!

In today's tutorial, I'm demonstrating how to use gold shimmer eyeshadow in a way that won’t exaggerate fine lines and wrinkles.

Tools and materials:

  • Brow pencil with brush
  • Eye primer
  • Concealer brush
  • Translucent powder
  • Powder brush
  • Blending brush
  • Eyeshadow palette with shades of pink
  • Shading brush
  • Small angled brush
  • Flat shader brush
  • Gold loose pigment
  • Highlighter
  • Black pressed powder shadow
  • Lash curler
  • Mascara
  • Powder blush
  • Liquid lipstick
Filling in your eyebrows

1. Fill in your eyebrows

As always, I’m starting by filling in my brows. First, brush the hairs in the right direction and then fill in sparse areas with a brow pencil. Draw small lines in the direction of the hair growth.

2. Prime your eyelids and set them

Apply eye primer to your lids and blend in with a concealer brush.

Don’t forget to spread the primer to the corners and up to the socket.

Next, set the primer with a translucent powder using a powder brush.

3. Apply a peach shade to the crease and lower lash line

Next, apply a peach eyeshadow as a transitional color in the crease of your eye.

Use a blending brush to spread the color. Keep on adding eyeshadow until you’re happy with the intensity.

Apply some of this shade at your lower lash line too.

4. Apply a salmon color to the crease and outer corners

Here you can see the shade I’m using now:

Salmon color

Apply this shade to the crease and outer corner using a flat, fluffy blending brush.

Next, apply the same color at your lower lash line using a small, angled brush, stamping it very close to your lashes.

5. Apply shimmer eyeshadow

The key to getting this shimmer eyeshadow right for mature skin is choosing the right kind of eyeshadow.

Here is the shade I chose, it’s smoother than the other sparkly shades in the palette:

Shimmer eyeshadow

It’s a matte eyeshadow with specks of shimmer in it.

Apply it to the main section of your eyelids with a flat, shader brush. As you can see, it looks pretty delicate but still glitzy.

6. Add loose pigment

If you want to take your gold shimmer eyeshadow up a notch, add loose pigment in a “sequin” texture.

Loose pigment

Simply apply this on top of the shimmer shadow with your finger.

7. Add highlighter

Apply a touch of highlighter to the inner corners of your eyes.

8. Draw wings

(See video 5:05 -5:32)

If you don’t have hooded eyes, draw wings as you normally would. For hooded eyes like mine:

Drawing wings

Using an angled brush, pull out an outer wing under the hood. Don’t take it all the way to the outermost corner of your lash line.

Instead, leave a small gap between the outer corner and the wing.

Then join it to the lash line.

This way, it’s okay if your wing goes under the fold because you will still have the lifted effect.

9. Highlight the brow bones

Using your highlighter again, apply it to your brow bones.

10. Accentuate your lashes

Next, curl your eyelashes carefully.

Then apply your favorite mascara to your top and bottom lashes.

11. Finish the rest of your face

Now that the eyes are shimmering and beautiful, it’s time to complete the face. Apply blush to add just a bit of flush to your cheeks.

Then apply your favorite lipstick. I’m using a matte liquid shade.

Here’s the finished look. It’s classy and youthful.

This eye makeup routine addresses all the issues: a glitter eyeshadow that doesn’t exaggerate fine lines and wrinkles, plus a winged lid that works with hooded eyes.
