In this tutorial, I'll be showing you four cute gym hairstyles for long hair. While you are working out, keeping your long hair secure and out of your way can be a pain. So, I wanted to share some of my best workout hairstyles. All you need is a comb and some clear hair elastics, and we can get started!

Tools and materials:

  • Hair comb
  • Clear hair elastics
  • Scrunchie or hair tie
Parting hair and starting to braid

Gym hairstyle 1- braided low ponytail

Part your hair in the middle. On one side, take a section at the front and divide it into two strands. Cross the front section over the back section.

Now add a section of hair to the back section by taking a section from next to it. Do the same thing with the front section – take some hair from next to it and add it in. Now you have two larger sections. Cross the front section over the back section again.

Repeat the process of adding to the sections and crossing the front over the back until you have run out of hair to add on that side. You will likely run out of hair to add when you get to about the bottom of your ear.

Tying hair at the end

Once you have added in all of your hair, tie off your braid with a hair tie. Repeat the same steps on the other side of your head.

Now, hold the two braids together at the back of your head. Remove the hair ties from the two sections and use one of the ties to tie the sections together.

Tying hair into a high ponytail

Gym hairstyle 2 - pull-through braid

Put your hair into a high, tight ponytail. Divide the ponytail into two equal sections: top and bottom.

Tying the top section of hair

On the top section of the ponytail, tie it off with a clear elastic about two inches from the top.

Creating a hole in the hair

Use your fingers to create a hole in the 2-inch top section.

Pulling hair through itself

Pull the bottom section of the ponytail up through that hole. Tighten the bottom section.

Now your bottom section is on top. Remove the tie from your new bottom section and use it to tie it off your new top section 2 inches from where it came through the hole and pull the new bottom section through it.

How should I style my long hair at the gym?

Repeat pulling the bottom section through the top section until you reach the bottom of your ponytail. Use your tie to tie off both sections of the ponytail at the bottom.

Gym hairstyle 3 - reverse pull-through braid

Make a high ponytail at the back of your head and tie it off 2 inches from the top. Use your fingers to make a hole in the 2-inch section.

Then, grab the rest of the ponytail, flip it up and push it through that hole from front to back. Tighten the ponytail once all the hair is flipped through the hole.

Reverse pull-through braid

Repeat tying off the ponytail at 2-inch intervals, making a hole and flipping the ponytail through the hole from front to back. Tie off the ponytail at the bottom.

Bun for workout

If you want to make a bun out of this ponytail, just wrap it around at the top of your head and use a thick scrunchie to hold it in place.

Gym hairstyle 4 - ponytail with top braid

Take one small section from the center front of your head and divide it into two sections. Cross the sections over and hold it in place with one hand.

Creating a braid on the top of the head

Take another small section of hair on one side of the original and cross it over to join the section on the opposite side. Now, take a small section from the other side and cross it over to join the section on the opposite side.

Tying the sections off at the back

Continue crisscrossing small sections of hair over the opposite side until you reach to top back of your head. Tie off the sections with a clear hair tie.

Securing the hair with a scrunchie

Tie the rest of your hair into a ponytail at the back of your head.
