Get Long Shiny Hair With This Super Easy Hair Oil Recipe
In this tutorial, I’m going to give you a hair oil recipe for growth that you only need to use once a week. It’s very easy to make and use. All you need to make this is Amla powder and any oil of your choice. Let’s get into it.
Tools and materials:
- Amla powder
- Olive oil (or any oil of your choice)
- Glass jar
- Funnel
- Sieve
1. Add amla powder to a pot
Add one level tablespoon of Amla powder to the pot.
If you want to make less than what I’m making, you can use half a tablespoon, but a tablespoon is the maximum I would advise.
2. Add your oil of choice to a pot
Add half a cup of your oil of choice to the pot. I’m using extra virgin olive oil. If you’re using olive oil, make sure it’s a high-quality olive oil.
Processed oil that usually says “no smell” or “refined for cooking” has some beneficial nutrients taken out of it.
3. Warm and stir the mixture
Turn the stove to its lowest possible heat and stir. You don’t want to fry or boil this.
Instead, you want it to heat up and almost simmer since you don’t want to denature all of the nutrients in the oil. However, it should be warm enough for the amla to release its good ingredients and infuse into the oil.
Keep mixing until you notice the oil starts to get lighter, then let it be. You’ll know the amla oil is almost done when the powder starts to form together, and the oil is lightly simmering.
Let it sit for an extra two to three minutes, making sure it’s not boiling.
4. Cover and let it sit overnight
Take the oil off the stove. Cover it with a lid and let it sit overnight to make sure everything infuses perfectly.
5. Pour into a jar
The next morning, stir up the mixture one last time and then decant it into a glass jar using a funnel and sieve.
It’s always best to use oils in a glass bottle, but if you don’t have one, you can use plastic. I also recommend using a glass with a pipette for easy application.
Amla oil for hair growth & other benefits
Here are some of the things Amla oil can do for your hair:
1. It can strengthen your scalp and your hair
2. It reduces premature pigment loss from your hair, such as early graying
3. It stimulates hair growth
4. It reduces hair loss and helps prevent baldness
5. It helps treat dandruff and dry scalp
6. It treats parasitic hair and scalp infections such as lice
7. It treats bacterial infections
8. It improves the overall appearance of hair
I recommend making your own Amla oil because most of the ones I found in stores don’t have the best ingredients, such as paraffinum liquidum, canola oil, glycerides, fragrances, hydroquinone, and amla extracts in canola oil. This means they end up having very little amla in them.
Those oils can make your hair look shinier, but they won’t actually infuse enough of the benefits of the amla oil into your hair. Your next best option is an oil that has Amla as the first ingredient.
How to apply
Now, I’m going to show you how to apply this DIY hair oil for growth.
1. Apply to your scalp
I apply generous amounts of Amla oil to my scalp the day before I wash my hair.
Make sure you’re applying to your entire scalp.
Here, I am applying the oil between every single twist and I’m rubbing it in with my finger. I love using oils when my hair is in twists or braids because there’s no manipulation and I don’t have to use a comb to make lines.
You can also use this as a hot oil treatment and you can heat the bottle as well, which is why it’s nice if it’s glass.
2. Apply on your edges
Once your scalp has enough oil, go ahead and focus on your edges.
It’s easy to get away with putting extra oil on your edges because you’ll be able to wash your face.
3. Massage your scalp
It’s best to start your scalp massage on your edges, especially if you put the oil there last, to make sure it doesn’t run down your face and actually absorbs into your hair.
You can also do an Ayurvedic scalp massage since you are using an Indian oil, but that’s not necessary, and it’s okay to do a regular one.
Make sure you only use the pads of your fingers. Don’t use your nails and don’t rub too hard. It should be a soft motion that stimulates blood flow to your scalp.
This will help absorb all of the benefits from the amla oil and naturally stimulate your hair growth by sending blood flow there.
4. Tie your hair up and wash it the next day
Finally, just tie your hair up and wash out the oil the next day.
