Here’s how to make a DIY Floral tote bag for Spring. Are you someone who loves cute floral tote bags for Spring? My friend, Karen is always toting lots of things to the pool as she swims EVERY DAY at our clubhouse pool (no matter the weather). So, I thought making her this around town tote would be a fun surprise present.

DIY tote bags, in my opinion, need to be easy to make, and sturdy to use. And of course, really cute! This floral tote bag checks all those boxes. Please read along with me, and see if you don’t agree. It’s a nice neutral color that will go with lots of outfits. And since pink is my friend’s favorite color, these particular silk hydrangeas should work perfectly with her wardrobe.

Above, is the finished project. It’s a darling two-handled tote with a large bunch of pink flowers on the front. (The tote actually comes with a little multi-colored pompom key chain, which I somehow forgot to photograph. Here’s how I made it:

Supplies Needed to Make a DIY Floral Tote Bag for Spring: (Click on the BLUE highlighted words to see each item.)

  1. Tote-This is a great tote on its own, even without the flowers as it’s large (18x15x8 inches) and is made out of natural jute fabric.
  2. Hand-held Steamer-I use this all the time to quickly steam a top if it is wrinkled coming out of the dryer. So fast and easy to use!
  3. These Fiskars Scissors-I LOVE these scissors! So sharp and easy to use with a lovely self-locking feature.
  4. Pink Silk Hydrangeas (that I cut apart into petals)
  5. A Hot Glue Gun and Glue Sticks
  6. Parchment Paper-I use this often when I bake.

Steps to Make a DIY Floral Tote Bag for Spring:

Step 1-

First I purchased the bag here. Unfortunately, when it arrived, it was creased from the packaging.

Step 2-

So I steamed out the crease, being careful not to get burned, using my handheld steamer.

Above is the tote bag with most of the creasing removed.

Step 3-

I got out my favorite sharp crafting shears. They’re by Fiskars which is a terrific scissors brand. It has the neat feature of self-locking so the scissors will stay sharp when in the drawer if it gets banged by any other utensils.

Step 4-

Now I cut one of the silk pink hydrangea head s into separate little petals for gluing to the tote.

See how close I am cutting the petals to the actual fabric, thereby minimizing any of the plastic stems on the flowers.

I cut some of the petals into double layers like in this photo above.

And I cut some of them into single flower petals as in this photo above.

Step 5-

In the above and below photos, using a glue gun, I glued lots of petals to the burlap tote. Before gluing, I carefully put a large piece of parchment paper inside the bag so that the hot glue wouldn’t seep through and seal the tote shut!

Here’s the almost finished floral tote bag. It was still drying in this photo, so the parchment paper is still peeking out of the top of the tote.

Ta-Da! This is the cute finished project! You could easily make a DIY floral tote bag for Spring more personalized for you by gluing different colors or types of flowers on your bag. Please let me know if I have inspired you to make a DIY floral tote bag for Spring, maybe for Mother’s Day?

Happy Early Spring!!!
