Here’s a very simple cosmetic bag DIY that’s a great way to upcycle your old jeans!

You can use this bag to hold school supplies, makeup, your phone, glasses or even, yes, your sunscreen (because we know summer is coming)!

This DIY denim bag comes together with just hot glue and a zipper, but if you prefer, you can always opt to sew it.

I’ll also show you how to make cute decorative flowers (for which you will need to do the simplest bit of sewing).

Tools and materials:

  • Old denim jeans
  • Assorted scrap felt
  • Zipper
  • Hot glue and glue gun
  • Sewing needle and thread
Cutting jeans

1. Cut your jeans

Cut two 23x15-centimeter (9x6-inch) rectangles from your old jeans.

It’s okay if the side seam is visible in one of your pieces.

Curving bottom corners

2. Curve the bottom corners

Use a small plate to trace a curved corner onto one bottom corner of one piece.

Curving bottom corners

Cut the curved corner.

Cutting

Fold over the piece, so you can use the cut curve as your guide for cutting the other bottom corner.

Then use your first cut piece as your template for cutting the curved corners on your second piece.

Adding zipper

3. Add a zipper

Fold the top edge of both pieces 1 centimeter (0.4 inches) to the inside and iron flat.

Adding glue

Sew or glue each piece to one side of your zipper, so the zipper is on the wrong side of your bag.

Making strap loop

4. Make a strap loop

Cut one belt loop off your old jeans.

Making strap loop

Glue the ends of the loop together with the right side facing out.

Making strap loop

Glue the belt loop to one side of your bag, close to the zipper, with the glued edge of the loop aligned with the outside edge of your bag.

Gluing bag

5. Glue the bag

Open your zipper half-way and turn your bag inside-out.

Gluing bag

Sew or glue your bag closed, applying the glue to the right side of your denim.

Applying clear nail polish

Apply clear nail polish along the edge of the seam, to keep the denim from fraying.

Colored felt

6. Decorate your bag

To make decorative flowers for your bag, start by cutting 5-centimeter (2-inch) squares of bright-colored felt.

Decorating bag

Weave a needle and thread in and out across the middle of each square.

Decorating bag

Pull the thread to gather the square in the middle.

Decorating bag

Tie and cut the thread, then fan out the sides of the square.

Decorating bag

Weave a needle and thread across the center of your gathered square.

Decorating bag

Pull the new gather to turn your square into a 4-sided petal.

Decorating bag

Tie off your thread, but don’t cut it yet.

Thread your needle to the top of your flower, and then thread a small bead onto it, to make the center of your flower.

Decorating bag

Secure the bead well and then tie off and cut your thread at the back of your flower.

Decorating bag

Make as many flowers as you like. Add stems and leaves made from green felt, and sew or glue all the felt pieces to your denim bag.

Decorating bag

I added a little blue flower pot to my design.

Adding strap

7. Add a wrist strap

Cut a small piece of rope for a wrist strap.

Adding strap

Thread the strap through the strap loop, and then thread both ends of the strap through a single bead.

Adding strap

Tie a knot in the end of the strap so the bead can’t fall off.
