How to Decorate a Tote Bag Using Your Own Cute Custom Stamps
In this tutorial, I'm going to share with you how to make your own custom stamps, as well as how to use them to decorate a tote bag. This DIY is super-easy and fun, plus you get to create a completely unique design that you love. Let's get started.
Tools and materials:
- Tote bag
- Speedy Carve block
- Carving tool
- Straight-edged knife
- Ink pad
- Tracing paper
- Pencil
1. Make the pattern for the stamp
There are a few things you will need to make your stamp. You will need some Speedy Carve soft block and a carving tool.
To make the custom stamp, you want to start by drawing a basic pattern on a sheet of tracing paper. I chose to draw three hearts. Be sure to use a pencil to draw your pattern.
2. Transfer the pattern
Once you have the pattern drawn, turn that tracing paper upside down onto a small piece of the block
Push it down with your fingers. That will transfer the lead from the pencil and the tracing paper onto the block.
3. Carve the stamp
With the image transferred to the block, it’s time to carve it out. Take the carving tool and carefully scrape away anything that you don't want to be part of your stamp.
When you have most of it off, use a craft knife to cut away the sides. You can save those pieces and use them for another stamp down the road.
4. Test the stamp
Be sure to test your stamp on some scrap paper before doing it on your tote bag. This makes sure there is nothing else that needs to be removed.
If there is any excess, use the carving tool again to smooth it out.
5. Stamp the tote bag
For my tote bag, I made two stamps; three hearts and a little rainbow.
To use the stamps, place them down onto the ink pad and gently push them with your fingers. You might want to pick it up and make sure it's all covered nicely.
Then, push it down firmly and evenly onto the tote. That's all it takes.
Create any pattern you like on the blank tote using different stamps and colors.
