Follow this simple DIY tutorial for step-by-step instructions on how make your own small denim purse from old jeans.

With this denim upcycling project, you’ll have something to keep makeup, school supplies, personal essentials, or just about any small items in. The handle makes it easy to carry, and the closure will keep your belongings safely inside.

If you don’t like sewing, you’re in luck, because most of this can be done with glue!

Tools and materials:

  • Old jeans
  • Super glue or glue gun
  • Scissors
  • Sewing pins
  • Sewing needle and thread
  • Button
  • Rope or cord
Cutting old jeans

1. Cut your old jeans

Lay your jeans flat with the side seam down the center of the leg, and cut off the bottom of your jeans below the knee.

The top third of the fabric will be the fold-over top flap of your purse, and the bottom two-thirds will be the purse itself.

Pressing denim flat

2. Hem the top

Fold the top edge in 1.5 centimeters (0.59 inches) and press flat.

Pinning

Pin the hem to hold it in place.

Gluing

3. Glue the bottom edge and top hem

With the fabric inside-out, glue the bottom edge together using a glue gun or super glue.

Gluing

Glue the top hem in place as well.

Making flap

4. Make the flap and closure

Turn the purse right-side-out and fold over the top third of the bag.

Removing belt loop

Remove a belt loop from your jeans.

Attaching belt loop

Glue the ends of the belt loop together, and then glue the loop to the outside front of the purse, just below the fold line.

Button loop

Glue a small piece of cord or rope to the inside of the front flap piece (between the two layers of fabric) for a button loop.

Adding button

Sew a button to the front of the bag, at the same position as the button loop.

Trimming excess cord

Trim off the excess button loop cord.

Cutting rectangle

Cut a small rectangle from your leftover denim and glue over the ends of the button loop to make it more secure.

Making wristband

5. Make a wristband

Tie a short length of cord or rope through the belt loop, for a wristband. Secure the knot you tie with glue to keep it from undoing.
