Make a boring messenger bag a little more fun with just a little bit of fabric!

The Boring Bag…

My husband goes to a lot of work conferences where he gets all sorts of things. The only problem is they are often boring and have the Conference logo on the. Well that’s not my vibe at all. I needed a new bag for school to hold my books and laptop so I decided to change this messenger bag just a smidge.

Some Fun Fabric to Livin’ Things up…

First I found some fabric that I would love. My middle son recently started his senior year with a Spiderman backpack. So taking a cue from him I chose this Spiderman fabric from Joann.

Trace a Pattern…

Then I traced the black part of the bag that had the conference logo. I was going to cover it up with the fabric. I added ½ inch seam allowance to what I traced.

Fabric and Interfacing…

Next I cut out the Spiderman fabric and some fusible interfacing. Then I ironed the two together so that the fabric would be more stable.

Baste the Curves…

Because the edges were rounded I did a basting stitch on the curved parts so I could turn the edges under. I pulled the thread on the basting stitch and it helped the edges curve in so they could be pressed to the inside.

Pin in Place and Sew…

Once they were pressed to the inside I placed the fabric on the part of the bag I was covering and pinned it in place.

I used my sewing machine to sew it to the sides and bottom. Then I hand stitched it to the top so that I could still access the zipper.

It’s all Done!

I love how it turned out! This was such a super fun and easy way to make this boring bag more fun. Now I’m already to start my “New” school adventure! No one want to be boring. Maybe you have a bag like this in your home just waiting for an update!
