We’re going to be making a DIY tablet sleeve. This is a handy solution to store your tablet in; not only does it look great, but the padded interior will keep your tablet nice and safe.

The design is very straightforward to make and I’m going to walk you through step by step.

Tools and materials:

  • Fabric
  • Wadding
  • Velcro
  • Scissors
  • Pins
  • Tape measure
  • Sewing machine

1. Measure and cut your pieces

For your outer and lining pieces, measure your tablet and add sewing allowance to get the required size. Proceed to cut out your material.

2. Sew the wadding

Next, sew wadding to the main fabric (you can use whichever type of stitch you like).

The wadding will keep your tablet nice and safe so that even if you knock the sleeve against something, the tablet shouldn’t get damaged.

How to sew the wadding

Sew a sort of zig-zag design so that it looks like this.

Trimming the excess wadding

3. Trim

Now that the fabric and the wadding are sewn together, trim around the fabric to remove the excess wadding.

Sewing the side seams of the tablet sleeve

4. Sew the side seams

Next, fold the fabric in half widthways with the good sides facing each other. Proceed to pin the sides into place and then sew the side seams.

5. Sew the tips

Pinch the bottom together and sew at the tip. Then, cut off the tips after sewing and turn the sleeve right side out.

Sewing lining for the tablet sleeve

6. Sew the lining

Repeat the process of pinning and sewing the sides together for the lining piece but leave a gap on one side of the seam. You again want to sew and then cut the tips as well.

7. Connect the two pieces

Insert the main bag into the lining, right side touching right side, and sew around the top. Then, turn it inside out using the gap in the lining, and proceed to sew the gap closed.

Sewing the secure the lining

8. Sew again

Now sew around the top edge again to secure the lining in place.

Making a fastener for the DIY tablet sleeve

9. Make the fastener

To create the fastener, cut out two rectangles and curve one end on each of them. Then, place them one on top of the other with the right sides touching and pin them in place.

Sew around the outside, leaving a gap to turn inside out.

Attaching Velcro to the fastener

10. Attach the Velcro

Next, sew up the gap and attach a piece of Velcro to one curved end.

Pinning the fastener onto the tablet sleeve

11. Sew onto the sleeve

Now pin the fastener onto the sleeve and sew.

Attaching the other side of the Velcro

12. Attach the other Velcro

Attach the other Velcro to the opposite side.
