Are you a chapstick addict like me? I have lip balms everywhere. I would panic if I couldn’t find a tube of the stuff in my purse. And natural lip balms can get expensive to buy all of the time.

So I was thrilled to find out that you can make mint lip balm! I thought it would be a hard or confusing DIY project. But it turns out it is SUPER SIMPLE to do!

And it’s definitely cheaper than buying tubes in stores or online.

These are perfect Christmas lip balms to make as stocking stuffers, gifts, or to sell.

I use olive oil in this chocolate chapstick recipe because it is rich and nourishing. It can be substituted with sweet almond oil or jojoba oil if you would like.

DIY Chocolate Mint Lip Balm

This recipe makes 15-18 tubes.

Supplies

  • ½ cup beeswax pastilles or chopped beeswax
  • 1 1/2 Tablespoons olive oil
  • 3 Tablespoons coconut oil (liquified)
  • 16 drops peppermint essential oil
  • 1 Teaspoon cocoa powder
  • Lip balm tubes
  • Double boiler

Directions

Step 1

Put water in the bottom pan of a double boiler to about 2/3 full and place on medium-high heat. Add beeswax to the top pan and place on top.

As you are heating the water, occasionally stir the wax to loosen it up and keep it from being one big clump. It will melt faster if you break it up a few times in the process.

Step 2

Combine the cocoa powder and olive oil in a bowl. Mix this together well, removing any dry lumps of cocoa and making sure it is a smooth mixture.

Step 3

Turn the heat down to a very low simmer once the beeswax starts to bubble up. Break up the wax if it needs it and just keep watching it until you have a clear liquid wax. Once you do, add in the coconut oil and stir well.

Step 4

Add the cocoa and olive oil mixture into the beeswax/coconut oil mixture. Stir together. Then add the peppermint essential oil.

Step 5

Leave the water over the heat on the lowest setting for now as you begin to fill the lip balm tubes.

Fill the tubes with the liquid mixture to just below the top of the container.

If your balm gets too thick to pour, place it back over the heat for a few minutes until it is liquid again.

Step 6

Let the lip balms cool off fully. This should take about an hour. When the middle of the tube feels cooled, they should be good. You can place the lids on once they are cool.
