If this is how your liner looks when you apply it…

Eyeliner on hooded eyes

…But this is how it looks when you relax your lid (below), then you know your hooded corner is interfering with your liner.

How not to do eyeliner on hooded eyes

In this makeup tutorial, I will show you a technique that is not just flattering on hooded eyes but is universally flattering no matter what eye shape you have. Because the eye makeup I’ll be doing is so soft, it looks classy on everybody. I can't wait to show you, so without further delay, let's begin!

Tools and materials:

  • Brow pencil
  • Concealer
  • Setting powder
  • Eyeshadow
  • Shimmer
  • Makeup brushes
  • Liquid liner
  • Mascara
  • Eyelash curler
  • Lip pencil
  • Lipstick
Defining brows with a brow pencil

1. Brows

Start with your brows, and for that, we’re using a brow pencil. My pencil has a micro tip, making it very easy to do those natural hair-like strokes. I don't like to fill in too much, and I like to keep the arch of the brow as high as possible because I want to make enough space underneath my brows for eye makeup.

Applying concealer as a base on the eyelid

2. Concealer

Then, use some concealer to clean up underneath the brows as well as on your lid as a base for the eyeshadows. Once done, lightly set it with some powder to prevent it from settling in the fine lines and creasing.

3. Eyeliner

Next, you’re going to work on your eyeliner. For that, we’re using a matte black eyeshadow with a small angled brush. Stamp it right at your lash line and then slowly thicken it before you pull a small wing in the outer corner.

Instead of using a liquid liner or gel liner, I find using eyeshadow so simple and so easy to work with.

When I keep my brows raised, the liner looks fantastic, and that's because it's lifted my hood along with the brow. If I now release the brow, though, the hood relaxes and interferes with the liner, and it also ends up covering a part of the liner, so overall, the liner looks distorted.

To remedy this, rather than keeping it sharp and neat, we’re going to try to soften it.

4. Eyeshadow

For eyeshadow, we’re going to use a shade that I think complements all eye colors, and that is military green. Take it with a small definer brush and start smoking out the edges of the liner with this eyeshadow.

The black eyeshadow that I used as an eyeliner blends out like a dream. If you had used a gel or a liquid liner, you would have had to put an extra effort into blending, and sometimes even after all that blending, you can still see the sharp edges.

5. Blend

Next, use a clean flat fluffy brush to blend the eyeshadow out further, so it looks really soft. We don’t want any harsh edges.

6. Eyeshadow

The next step is to take a little bit more eyeshadow with a small definer brush and blend it right on top of the eyeliner, so it looks smoky.

7. Concealer

Then take a little concealer with a flat brush and clean up the edges.

Now, when I keep my lid relaxed, the hood in the outer corner does not interfere with my liner.

Applying shimmer to the lid

8. Shimmer

The makeup now looks great as it is, but I just wanted to oomph it up a little more and add another color, so I went with a beautiful gold shimmer. Dust it all over your lid with the flat fluffy brush.

Applying highlighter to the inner corner

9. Highlighter

Then highlight your inner corner and brow bones with a silver shimmer.

Applying liquid eyeliner

10. Liquid liner

Here's an optional step: If you want to deepen your lash line, you can use a liquid or gel liner. Be sure to keep it very close to your lash line.

Curling lashes with an eyelash curler

11. Mascara

Finish up with some mascara; I like to first use an eyelash curler before applying the mascara.

Applying a nude lipstick

12. Lipstick

For my lips, I’m first using a lip pencil and then filling in my lips with lipstick in a beautiful muted rose shade.

This is a great eye makeup routine for women like me who have hooded eyes. My eyelids don’t cover the makeup and it all together just looks natural and gorgeous.
