In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to fix broken powder makeup.

I recently dropped and crumbled my powder foundation and was hesitant to add alcohol or any other liquid to my makeup for fear of ruining the formula.

In this makeup repair tutorial, you’ll learn to repair a broken compact with zero alcohol or other additives.

This works for any broken powder such as bronzer, highlighter, and eyeshadow. Let’s get started!

Tools and materials:

  • Makeup brush
  • Ziploc bag
  • Paper towel
  • Scissors
  • Tissue
Breaking up large chunks

1. Break up any large chunks

Set the compact down and use the end of a makeup brush or another similar tool to break up any remaining large chunks.

You want the product to resemble as much of a powder as possible.

Bagging the powder

2. Bag the powder

Pour all of the powder into a Ziploc bag.

I recommend doing all of this on top of a paper towel or newspaper because it can get a bit messy. Lay the bag flat and make sure all of the hair is removed before sealing it up.

Pulverizing the powder

3. Pulverize the powder as fine as possible

Grab something with a flat or rounded edge that’s about the size of a quarter. Use it to glide over the Ziploc bag to continue to pulverize the powder until it’s as fine as possible.

Don’t rush through this process and take your time.

Clean compact

4. Clean the compact

Rinse out your empty compact with water until it’s as good as new.

Pouring powder

5. Pour the powder back into the pan

Carefully pour the contents of the bag back into the compact pan.

I recommend snipping the corner of the bag so the powder can easily slide out of the bottom and it’s a smoother and cleaner process.

Spreading the powder

6. Spread the powder within the compact

Evenly spread out the powder into the compact. Take your time and don’t overflow the edges.

Try to keep as much of the product in the pan as possible.

Pressing powder down

8. Press the powder down

Use your fingertips to lightly press on the powder. Gently pat it down.

Stay away from the edges and focus the pressure primarily in the center.

9. Continue to press the powder down with a tissue on top

Grab a tissue and carefully place it on top of the powder. Then use your fingers and gently press the makeup into the compact with a little more force.

So, working from the center out towards the edge, apply a bit of pressure so the makeup is packed in there. Do this for a few minutes.

You don’t need to add water or alcohol as there are already bonding agents in the powder, so once it’s finely milled and put back together, it’s going to have no problem sticking and becoming a solid compact again.

Cleaning up the edges

10. Clean up the edges with tissue

Removing the tissue, your compact should be smooth and completely repaired.

Use a tissue to clean up any of the powder that’s on the edges.

Testing the compact

11. Test the compact

Flip the compact over face down so the powder side is on the paper towel. Lightly tap the back to make sure the product is locked in and there’s no additional fallout.

If nothing comes out, your compact is brand new and ready to use!
