I’m currently in the process of trying to grow out my pixie cut and right now I’m looking very much like a page boy or Joan of Arc character. This is not my vibe, and I wanted to share my tricks and hairstyles for awkward-length hair that I have been using while I go from a pixie cut to a bob.

Tools and materials:

  • Headband
  • Comb
  • Hair clips
  • Bobby pins
  • Thin ribbon
Hairstyles for awkward-length hair

1. Headbands

An obvious but really good strategy is using headbands. I wear a more padded headband as it hides the awkwardness. It gives off a cute short bob vibe, not a page boy look.

It works great when your hair doesn’t want to cooperate and is sticking up everywhere, even if you put water on it or try to restyle it. Sometimes there’s nothing you can do, and anyone with short hair can relate to this, right?

Tip: You can also use a bandana and make it into a headband for the same effect.

Decorative hair comb

2. Comb

If one side is acting up a little more than the other, use a pretty hair comb.

Awkward-length hairstyles

If you’ve never used a hair comb before, the proper way to put it is to slide it backward and then flip it around to the right side.

How to style a hair comb

It should stick right into your hair where you place it. The hair comb stays in place, especially if you have thicker hair as I do. See my video from 1:28 minutes to see exactly how I do it.

Also, you can place it down (without flipping it backward). You can find these hair combs in various materials, from plastic to metal.

Decorative hair clips

3. Hair clips

Another cute hairstyle for awkward-length hair is to use fun hair clips! Mine has an alligator clip on the back and so they really work well with securing your hair, especially for those random pieces that stick up in the back.

How to style transitioning short hair

You really can’t hide hairclips, so using fun and cute ones like I have will give a little more “pizazz.”

Any hair clip like this really works great for those tiny bits that stick out and also adds some decoration to your hair. Another simple option is using standard hair clips that match your hair color or the normal metal ones.

You can always use these to keep things out of the way. I won’t go into this too much because I feel that everyone understands how these basic clips work.

Cute bobby pins

4. Bobby pins

Any sort of bobby pin is great! I have these colored ones that I like to use.

Hairstyles with hair behind ears

These are much better than hair clips when it’s in an area where you have something else going on. For example, if you’re wearing glasses or a mask, these are great to use by your ear because they’re thinner.

It’s much easier to use these to keep your hair in place and not in the way. Also, they look adorable. If you want something basic, you can find various bobby pins in different colors (to match or not match your hair color).

Tying a ribbon in hair

5. Ribbon

The last hairstyle for awkward hair that I like (which I think is underrated), is to put a ribbon in my hair. I have a green ribbon that I like to wear as a headband. This won’t help with anything; it just looks cute! It helps distract people from whatever might be going on with your hair. It may also help keep things out of place.

It looks cute, and I always feel like Snow White when I wear my hair like this!
