How to Make a Handkerchief in Just 15 Minutes: Super-Simple Gift Idea

In this tutorial, I'll show you how to make a handkerchief as a gift or for a special occasion.
For example, some weddings have custom colors and fabrics for the special day. Not just for the bridesmaids but the groomsmen as well! Here is a way to make custom DIY handkerchiefs that can be used as pocket squares to wear to the wedding and as a gift to use later on.
You can use any type and color of fabric to make a truly custom piece. Let’s get started on how to make a handkerchief!
Tools and materials:
- Fabric
- Scissors
- Pins
- Sewing machine
- Serger or overlock machine (optional)
- Iron
1. Cut the fabric
The average size of a pocket square or men’s hankie is 10 X 10 inches. Depending on how many squares you are planning to make, make sure you have enough fabric.
2. Fold the fabric
Create a hem by folding in one side between ¼ to ½ of an inch. Press the fabric to hold it in place.
Set up the turns by each fold and iron them down to cover up any frayed edges and to create a smooth finish.
3. Get ready to sew
Some people feel better having the fabric pinned in place. You can also go rogue and go without. It’s totally up to you!
Line up the edge of the fabric with the inside edge of the foot of the sewing machine. Sew right at the edge of the hem.
As you get to the corner, just tuck the edges in place and do a turn and pivot. For beginners, this means folding the edge up and tucking everything inside.
Put the needle into your work, lift the presser foot, and rotate the fabric and fold it in.
Put the foot down and you’re ready to go!
4. Serge (optional)
If you have a serger, serge all the edges.
Then fold the fabric over very tightly so you have a super tiny hem.
Sew the hem with the same turn-and-pivot technique.
