Learn how to make a dandelion infused oil. Dandelions are high in antioxidants, vitamins, and minerals that have several benefits for your skin. You can then use your dandelion oil to make soap, lotion, and other DIY beauty recipes.

Dandelion oil is an herbal infusion. This gives your carrier oil the benefits of the herb or flower. You can use any carrier oil, but I used chia seed oil. I have more information about different carrier oils in my dandelion oil benefits post.

First, pick your dandelions and let them dry. I set mine on a cookie sheet to dry. We want to use just the flowers and not the stems or leaves. Make sure they are completely dry. You can also buy dried dandelion flowers to use.

Then fill a mason jar half full with the dried flowers. I used a quart jar because I planned to make a lot of things with the infused oil. Then pour a carrier oil over the flowers. Make sure the flowers are completely covered.

Then you can either set the jar in a cool, dark location for two weeks to infuse. Give it a gentle shake each day.

For a quicker infusion, set the jar on a towel inside a slow cooker. Then add water to the slow cooker to cover the oil and flowers in the jar. Heat on the warm setting for four hours. Do not cover.

Once the infusion is over, strain out the dried flowers and discard. I use cheesecloth. Save the oil.

Now you have dandelion infused oil! It has a yellow hue, but the shade can change based on the carrier oil that you use. I recommend using sweet almond oil or safflower oil for an all purpose oil.

You can then use your dandelion oil to make one of these recipes:

Ingredients

  • 8 ounces carrier oil
  • 1/2 cup dried dandelion flowers
Instructions
Quick Method
Collect your dandelions and save just the flower part. Set them on a cooling rack or on a towel lined cookie sheet to dry. I let mine dry for a week.
Place the dried dandelions in a pint jar. Cover with the carrier oil of your choice.
Place a hand towel on the bottom of a slow cooker. Place the jar of oil covered dandelions on top of the towel.
Add water to the slow cooker to cover the flowers and oil.
Turn the slow cooker to the warm setting and let the flowers and oil infuse for four hours. Do not cover the slow cooker because it can cause condensation to fall down into the jar of oil.
Turn off the slow cooker and let the oil cool.
Use cheesecloth to strain out the dandelions and discard them.
Long Method
Pick your dandelions and set on a cookie sheet or cooling rack to dry completely for a week.
Be sure that the flowers are completely dry and have no moisture because they can grow mold in the next step.
Place the dried flowers in a mason jar and cover with a carrier oil. There's no exact amount of flowers or oils, but the oils must cover the flowers so there is no air getting to the flower.
Let the flowers and oil infuse up to two weeks. Give the jar a gentle shake each day to mix the oil and flowers.
After two weeks, strain out the flowers using cheesecloth. Discard the cheesecloth and flowers.
