Easy Sewing Tutorial: How to Make Cozy Fleece Mittens

In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how you can upcycle an old fleecy sweater and make a pair of mittens from it.
The mittens are super warm and snuggly and won’t cost you a dime. Let’s get started!
Tools and materials:
- Fleece sweater
- Pencil
- Paper
- Weight
- Ruler
- Scissors
- Tailor’s chalk
- Pins
- Sewing machine
- Tape measure
- Elastic
- Safety pin
1. Trace around hand
Fold a piece of paper in half and place your hand on top. Keep your fingers together with your thumb stretched comfortably to the side.
Trace around your hand with a pen, rounding out the area at the top of the fingers. Don’t draw too close to your hand; you want to leave about 1.5cm (0.6 inches) all around.
2. Cut the pattern
Proceed to cut along the lines to cut the pattern out.
3. Cut the fabric
Use the sleeves of your fleece to cut the pattern (you want to ensure that the fleece you’re using is big enough to do this).
Mark the fold on your pattern and place it along the longer side of the sleeve.
Place a weight on top of the pattern to stop it from moving around.
Then add 10cm (4 inches) to the bottom of the pattern. Cut along from that point.
Proceed to cut around the pattern.
4. Mark the fabric
Open up the pattern and mark 10cm (4 inches) up from the bottom.
5. Fold and mark fabric
Fold over the bottom section and pin it down. Then mark the middle of this fold.
6. Sew the fabric
Proceed to sew along the top of the fold and the middle of the fold.
7. Take measurement and cut elastic
Take your wrist measurement (mine measured 16cm - 6.3 inches). Then cut elastic to this size.
8. Feed elastic through gap
Attach a safety pin to one or both ends of the elastic and use it to help you feel the elastic through the gap that you sewed.
Once the elastic is through to the other side, pin it at both sides to the fabric.
9. Sew the glove
Proceed to pin the two sides of the glove together, with the right sides facing. Pin all around the outside.
Then sew where you’ve pinned, leaving a small seam allowance.
10. Cut off excess
Cut off any excess fabric.
Repeat the process for the second mitten, and you’re done!
How to make fleece mittens
Here are the finished mittens! They are so warm and cozy and were super straightforward to make.
This is a great DIY that you can do if you have an old fleece that you no longer wear and want to upcycle it. I hope you’ll give it a go!
