Thin hair before the volumizing routine

Washing hair before blow drying

1. Start with clean hair

The first thing you want to do is start with hair that has been properly washed. Residue and dirt can give way to a weighted root almost immediately.

Using products that say "volume"

2. Use volumizing products

The next thing you want to do is set up the foundation for your blow-dry, and this is where styling products come in. Look for products that say “volume” or “volumizing”.

Applying volumizing products to the roots of hair

Apply these products at the root. Massage the product into the root and brush it out to the ends to ensure even application.

Using a blow-drying brush

3. Perfect your blow-dry technique

The next step on how to make thin hair look fuller is to use a blow dryer brush. As a licensed hairdresser, I highly recommend this handy hair styling tool to all my clients who struggle with volume and smoothness.

The way that it works is by essentially combining a blow dryer and a brush together, so the air flows from the inside and the hair gets smoothed with the bristles while also being dried.

Working through the hair section by section

Be sure to work section by section. Also, when you section your hair, make sure it’s a good size that will fit onto the brush. If you take too large of a section, you won’t be able to control or manipulate the hair as well as get that much-needed volume.

When you get to eye level, start moving the brush upward. Like this, you position your roots, so they have as much volume as possible.

Hairdresser tips for fuller, thicker hair

Another little hack you can do for fuller and thicker hair is to part your hair deeply on one side. Since so much hair lands up on one side, you’ll get an instant lift without putting in much effort.

Using the cool shot button to set hair

Also, use the cool shot button on your blow dryer or blow dryer brush. Hair sets its shape when it’s cooled down, so this means you can manipulate it with heat and then freeze it.

I’m blowing it out with hot air in the front, wrapping it up, and then cooling it down.

As you can see, when I release the hair, the shape has been set in as you can see. It will look fuller and last much longer than if I didn’t use the cool shot button.

Tips for getting fuller and thicker hair

Backcombing the hair

4. Backcomb your hair (optional)

This step is optional but sure does the trick, too. Use a backcombing brush in small sections; these brushes have densely packed bristles that are perfect for creating that cushioned backcombing. It lifts the hair up and holds it in place.

Using lightweight hairspray to keep volume in place

5. Use lightweight hairspray

Now, contrary to what many people use, I like finishing off with a lightweight hair spray and not a firm one. It won’t weigh my thin hair down and is brushable enough that it’s soft and flexible.
