What Does Shower Mist Do?

This shower steam spray is a spray made with essential oils that you spray into the water or steam of your shower or spray on the walls of your shower to turn your shower into an aromatherapy spa.

Personally, I spray it on the sides of my tub. I have a fiberglass tub surround, and I plan on replacing it soon. It has not affected my shower at all.

However, if you have a brand new shower unit or one made of a material that you think could be damaged by essential oils, then do not spray this essential oil shower spray on the walls of your shower.

Instead, spray it on a washcloth and set on the floor of the shower or hang from the towel bar.

How Do You Use Shower Oil Mist?

After you make your shower steam spray, you might wonder how to use shower mist. A DIY shower mist is very easy to use.

Simply spray it on the floor of your shower, on a washcloth to hang in the shower, or into the stream of water to get the aromatherapy benefits from the essential oils.

How to Use Essential Oils in the Shower

I have an entire post devoted to how to use essential oils in the shower, so I won't repeat all of it here. However, here are some recipes and DIYs for making your own products.

Best Essential Oils for Shower Mist Aromatherapy

Simply Earth used Balsam Fir in their shower mist spray recipe. Balsam Fir is used in aromatherapy as an expectorant and to reduce anxiety and promote sleep.

I made it for cough and cold season, but I also made several other little bottles for other aromatherapy benefits. Here are some of my favorite essential oils to use in the shower:

  • Happy Joy is an uplifting blend that's fruity and floral.
  • Energy is my favorite morning blend. It's fresh and invigorating.
  • Liquid Luck is uplifting and calming with a spicy scent.
  • Focus is energizing with a fresh scent.
  • Relief is soothing and smells herbal.

Optional Ingredients for Essential Oil Shower Spray

This is a basic recipe with just water or alcohol and essential oils. However, I strongly recommend using a preservative if you are using water.

Without a preservative, this DIY shower mist will be good for just a few days. You can also store your DIY shower aromatherapy in the fridge for a few weeks.

Simply Earth has Geogard ECT, which is a preservative for water based formulas that extends the shelf life to 6 months without refrigeration.

You can also use a Natural Solubizer as an emulsifier to mix the water and essential oils. Otherwise, you'll have to shake the bottle each time because the oils and water will separate.

Unfortunately, there is no exact amount of natural solubizer to use in recipes. You can start with a 1:1 ratio of drops of oils and solubizer in a small bowl. Then add more drops of solubizer up to 1 part essential oil to 10 parts solubizer.

Keep stirring as you add the solubizer. When it turns clear, you've added enough solubizer. Then you can add the water.

I don't recommend spraying essential oils and water on your skin because they don't mix well. However, it is fine to spray in the shower since it will not touch your skin.

You could also use a high proof alcohol like Everclear to make this shower steam spray. That will act as a preservative, and the essential oils mix with the alcohol.

However, this is more expensive to make. Water works just fine if you take precautions by making small batches and tossing after a few days, storing in the fridge for a few weeks, or using a preservative.

I don't recommend using rubbing alcohol to make an essential oil shower spray because rubbing alcohol can cause irritation when inhaled.

Here's what you need for an essential oil shower mist:

If you are using Natural Solubizer, combine essential oils and Natural Solubizer in a small bowl. Add the essential oils first and slowly add about 50 drops of Natural Solubizer. Stir constantly and continue adding Natural Solubizer until the oils and solubizer are blended. Pour into the empty bottle.

If you are not using Natural Solubizer, then you can add the essential oils to the bottle.

Add 1 ounce (or 2 tablespoons) of distilled water to the bottle with the essential oils. Place the cap on and shake gently to combine.

Spray the essential oil shower spray on the walls of the shower or on a washcloth placed in the shower before turning on the water to create aromatherapy steam.
