Fashion is cyclical, with many old trends making a reappearance and coming into the spotlight again. That is what is happening right now with handbags, so in this lookbook, I want to share how to style 90s and Y2K purses.

I am a big fan of handbags, and there is something about wearing vintage-style handbags in the time we are currently in that I love.

Carrie Bradshaw with her Fendi baguette

1. The Fendi baguette

In 1997, Fendi designed their famous baguette bag.

Sex and the City and the baguette bag

It became very popular because of its exposure in Sex and The City, and as a result, back then, everyone was wearing these style bags.

Take a look at films and TV shows produced around that time and you’re likely to spot a baguette bag in there somewhere.

Styling Y2K mini purses

A few years ago, these bags made a huge comeback; many models and celebrities could be seen sporting one of them on their shoulders.

The reason I like these bags so much is that I think that they’re a perfect size - they’re pretty small but big enough to hold all of your necessities.

I also love this style bag because it can be worn in so many different ways; you can just as easily style them as part of a dressy evening look as you can for a casual daytime outfit.

How to wear a denim baguette-style bag

I have here a cute denim baguette-style bag. I like that it has a wide handle, so it is really comfy to wear on your shoulder.

Denim is a very neutral and classic material making styling the bag so simple and effortless. Here, I’ve paired it with some denim shorts, a hoodie, and some chunky white sneakers.

Monogram Y2K purse

2. Monogram

The next bag is this more classic beige handbag, it has a trendy monogram print that makes it really classy and elegant.

I chose to style it in a more formal look with a black turtleneck and blazer. However, I also wanted to give the outfit a casual edge with some cut-off jeans and chunky boots. I think that this is the perfect street style look.

Black satin handbag with faux fur and sparkles

3. Bling and faux fur

Next up, I have a black satin handbag with fluffy faux fur on the top and sparkles on the buckle.

When styling something like this, the key is to try not to overload the rest of the look with aggressive details because it is already quite a stand-out piece.

I chose a very simple outfit of a black long-sleeve top and some purple pants. The cutout shoulders of the top add some nice extra detail.

90s-style black nylon purse

4. Neutral nylon

The next bag is this vintage Celine nylon one that I thrifted for only a fraction of the original price. Nylon bags are kind of a thing right now, so this was such a win. This bag isn’t a baguette-style one, but it is still very 90s/early 2000s.

How to style a 90s purse

This bag really is my go-to bag because the neutral color and design mean that it goes with almost everything in my wardrobe. I wear it very often.

Lindsay Lohan and a Louise Vuitton purse in Mean Girls

5. Vintage Vuitton

The last piece I want to show you is this vintage Louis Vuitton handbag. I saw this handbag featured in the Mean Girls movie, and I knew right then that I wanted the exact same one.

The bag is bright and eye-catching, so I prefer to style it with simple and neutral colors. This allows the bag to pop and be the statement piece of the outfit.

As I said, these type of bags are making their comeback, so if you have any old ones at the back of your wardrobe, pull them out and put them on. If you don’t, you can thrift around for some great finds.
