6 Effective Tips on How to Use Concealer Correctly
Hey everyone! Today, we're going to be talking about how to use concealer correctly. We’ll look at some dos and don’ts when applying concealer. So, without further ado, let’s look at some common makeup mistakes to avoid and makeup tips to embrace!
Tools and materials:
- Concealer
- Concealer brush or beauty blender
- Setting powder
- Color correctors
1. Tone of concealer
The first thing you want to keep in mind is tone. When using a concealer to highlight or brighten, it should be about two to three shades lighter than your skin tone. However, if you’re trying to conceal blemishes, use a shade that actually matches your skin tone or the tone of your foundation.
2. Use a primer
Next up, I would recommend using a primer underneath your concealer. I'm using a concealer primer by Benefit.
But, if you don't have a concealer primer, simply use an eyeshadow primer underneath your concealer. This prevents the concealer from creasing and helps it to last longer.
3. How to apply concealer under the eyes
I'm using a concealer to highlight my under-eye area. I don’t recommend applying your concealer in a half-moon shape because it doesn’t look very natural.
Instead, you want to create an inverted triangle shape beneath the eye. This highlights the entire under-eye area and looks a lot more natural.
4. Pat your concealer onto the skin
Next, whenever you’re blending your concealer, don’t use sweeping or wiping motions because it can move your concealer around. Instead, use patting motions to keep your concealer in the correct place.
5. Set the concealer with powder
It is extremely important to set the concealer in place with a powder. But, often by the time we are done with the rest of our faces, the under-eye area has already started to crease.
A common mistake we make is going ahead and directly setting the under-eye area without checking for those creases and fine lines. This means we end up setting those creases in place and they will be there all day long.
Therefore, it's always a good idea to double-check if there are any creases of fine lines first. Blend them out before going in with a setting powder. Again, when setting your concealer, never use sweeping or wiping motions. Pat or roll the powder onto your skin.
6. Use correctors on dark circles and redness
If you have dark circles under your eyes, or redness around your face, don't use a standard concealer on them directly. It can actually make them ashy or create a gray cast.
Instead, use correctors. For dark circles, first apply a coral or orange-colored corrector. For redness, first go in with a green-colored corrector. Then, you can apply your usual concealer.
