DIY Flare Jeans: How to Make Cropped & Frayed Hem Flare Jeans
Skinny jeans may make you look pared down and slim but the style is changing. Flared jeans are trending and super on point now. If you’ve been wanting to learn how to make flare jeans or cropped flare jeans, here’s how to DIY flare jeans in just about an hour. Let me show you how!
Tools and materials:
- Jeans
- Scissors
- Measuring tape
- Marking or tailor’s chalk
- Sewing machine (use a denim or heavyweight needle)
1. Take measurements
You’ll need two measurements. The first is to measure from your waist down to your knees. The second measurement is the width of your knee multiplied by two. You’ll need the second measurement when making the flare.
Mark that measurement with the chalk.
2. Cut the jeans
Cut the jeans straight across the knee line measurement.
3. Use the legs of the jeans
Cut away the original hem from the bottom of the cut-off legs.
Fold each one of the leg pieces in half. Cut along the fold to create two pieces.
Cut along the inseam. That’s the thickest seam on the inside of the leg.
Then cut off the inseam.
4. Create the flare
Lay the pieces right sides together. Sew a straight stitch along on the short end to create a long strip.
Set your machine to the longest stitch (5.0) to make a gathering stitch. Sew the long stitch at the very top of the strip.
Here is where you will need the second measurement. Gather the fabric to the width of the knee line (knee width X 2). Pull the threads at the gathering stitch and distribute the gathers evenly.
5. Attach the flare
Place the flare right sides together, folding it in half. Sew the other short end.
Place the jeans with the right sides facing you. Place the flare piece on the wrong side facing you, so the flare and the jeans are right sides together.
Line up the gathered edge to the raw edge of the jeans.
Sew them together using a straight stitch.
6. Fray the edges
Once the flare is attached to the jeans, hem the bottoms of the flare. You could also fray the bottoms which is a great look! Check out this video on how to fray jeans to learn the best way to do it.
