Lovely old vintage crockery pieces that are broken or no longer used or appreciated really inspire me to create some new pretty brooches from what might otherwise end up in landfill.

Old ceramics

I begin to cut up a few pieces with nice designs and patterns. I wear protective eye goggles and cut with wheeled tile nippers. These make cutting easy and is actually therapeutic!

I then use some carbide stone attachment to my mini hand drill to sand the raw sharp edges.

Sanding edges

It’s also great to sand the shape to how you’d like it too.

Next it’s time to sand the reverse to create a nice rough surface to help brooch pin glue well.

Sand the back

Now to use two part epoxy resin glue to stick the metal brooch pin. It’s two pea size blobs mixed together and spread onto both back of ceramic and on brooch pin.

Mix glue

Hold the pin carefully in place and try and put it centrally onto the back so it hangs and sits well when pinned. Then leave to dry for ten minutes or so until it stops feeling tacky. Remember to wash it from your hands quickly if you spill on yourself is like superglue!

The vintage mid century ceramic brooch pin or badge is so unique and just right for adding some quirky interest to your outfit.
