Luscious lips brighten up your face and bring it to life. But if you have lipstick problems like the color bleeding or feathering, you’ll want to learn how to prevent it. If you’re not sure what that is, lip bleeding and lip feathering are what happens when your lipstick starts to seep outside of your natural lip line.

If you have mature skin, with fine lines around your lips, feathering is very visible. So, follow this tutorial for tips to overcome lip bleeding and feathering and get the luscious lips you want. There are only 4 easy steps to this technique, so let’s start!

Tools and materials:

  • Lip primer
  • Lipstick
  • Lip gloss
  • Small makeup brush
  • Cotton swab

I'm using makeup from  Look Fabulous Forever, which is specially designed for older skin, but you can replicate the same techniques with your own preferred products.

Applying lip primer before lipstick

1. Start with lip primer

Applying lip primer before your lipstick will go a long way to solving feathering and bleeding lipstick. Apply the primer just around the edges of your lips. By putting around the edges, rather than directly on your lips, you create a seal around your lips – essentially a barrier that the lipstick can’t cross.

2. Clean your lips

Next, use a cotton swab to clean your actual lips. Be careful not to remove the lip primer.

Applying lipstick with a small makeup brush

3. Add lip color

Use a small makeup brush to apply your lipstick, creating a nice sharp edge as you go. Add more color over the first coat if you wish.

Applying lip gloss over the lipstick

4. Top with lip gloss

Finish by dotting some lip gloss on top of the lipstick. Be careful not to spread the lip gloss, just dot it in. This gloss finish over your lip color will help to make your lips look fuller.
