Today, I'm going to show you a neutral makeup look that will suit absolutely everybody, whether you are warmer, cooler, or more neutral in coloring.

I’ll also be giving some tips for women over 50 on how to apply makeup in the best way on older skin.

The makeup I’m using is from the Look Fabulous Forever range, made specifically for mature skin. However, you can achieve the same results with any brand of makeup.

Prepping the face

1. Prep your face

Start by cleansing and moisturizing your face, and then apply some face primer and foundation.

Applying setting powder

2. Setting powder

Now go in with some translucent setting powder and just sweep it over your face with a powder brush.

I love it because it doesn't sit in any fine lines or wrinkles that you might have, but it will just set your foundation and keep everything in place all day long.

Priming eyes

3. Eye primer

I use eye primer every day before putting eyeshadow on. The secret to this product is just to use the tiniest amount. You can either route it on with your finger, or you can use a small brush.

It is really important to put this product onto dry and oil-free lids.

Just put it on where you would put the shadow. Eye primer will make your eyelids a perfect color. We all have discoloration as we get older on our lids, the little veins that show through.

This will cover that up to make any eyeshadow color you put on a true color, and it also stops any kind of creasing. It'll keep your eyeshadow on all day.

Applying eyeshadow

4. Eyeshadow

Next, we’re going to use some soft neutral matte eyeshadows that will suit absolutely everyone. There are three colors in the eye palette I’m using - cream, rose gold, and taupe.

Start by applying the cream shade all over your lid. Then put some rose gold eyeshadow into your socket line to just add a little bit of color without it looking like you’ve got a strong color on.

Then take the taupe shade and use a little bit of it in the socket line to give it a tiny bit more definition. Apply it with a windscreen wiper motion.

You want to keep the outer angle fairly sharp because if it comes down too low, it tends to droop the eye more. Proceed to blend the shades together to create a seamless eye look.

Applying eyeshadow

Now go in with a chocolate shade to create the effect of eyeliner. This will create a much more gentle look than using a more harsh liquid eyeliner.

Apply it with a wedge brush to make it look very soft. Put it onto the base of the top lashes and wing it slightly upwards on the outside just to lift it. Just press it into the lashes.

You want a thicker, lifted outer edge and then taper it in towards the center.

Applying highlighter

5. Highlighter

Apply highlighter underneath your brow and in a C-shape on top of your cheekbones. Then do a stripe down the center of your nose and your frown lines.

Light brings forward, so it will just soften them. Also, put a tiny amount on your cupid's bow.

Proceed to blend everything out. I tend to use my fingers but use a brush under the eyebrows to make it a bit more precise.

Filling in brows

6. Eyebrows

Finish off the eye look with your brows. Use a spoolie brush to smooth down any unruly hair.

Then fill in your brows where there are gaps using a brow coloring with little feathery strokes.

The product I’m using allows you to paint on even if you've got no brow at all. You'll often find that you lose the end of your brows as you get older, so you might need to just add on at the tail.

Now brush through to soften the effect with a spoolie brush again.

Applying blush

7. Blush

Put a soft pink blush on your cheeks with your fingers and then blend it with a blusher brush.

Sweep the brush slightly upwards, starting just a bit further than the middle of your cheeks - don’t go in too much.

I like to hold the brush quite firmly at the bristles so I have more control over it, and I tend to use the brush in a slightly circular and upward motion. This gives me a healthy look.

Applying lipstick

8. Lipstick

Finish the look with some lipstick. I’m using one in a soft cinnamon color.

Neutral makeup look

Neutral makeup look

I have a beautiful makeup look using natural shades. The makeup looks very subtle as the goal was for it to enhance my natural appearance, without drawing too much attention to the makeup itself.

Why no mascara on the older model? I'm 73 and if I'm without mascara my brain was on vacation when I did my makeup in the morning.
