Want to look comfortable and as chic as ever? In this tutorial, I will be making a stunning pair of lounge shorts. This is the second part of my two-piece lounge set series. If you want to know how to sew a two-piece lounge set, you can check out the first part, where I made a lounge top, here. You can use the same fabric from the lounge top tutorial to make the shorts, too. That way you can make a lounge set that’s matching. So let’s get started, join me as I sew lounge shorts that are easy, chic, and so comfy!

Tools and materials:

  • 1 yard stretchy and breathable fabric
  • 2 yards double folded bias tape (1/4" wide)
  • Shorts
  • Sewing machine
  • Thread
  • Pins
  • Measuring tape
  • Scissors

Make the pattern

Get an old pair of shorts out that fit and have a loose fit. You will need it for the pattern. You should make sure they curve and go inwards on the sides. If you don’t have shorts like these, simply use a regular pair and mark where you want the curves to sit.

Women’s lounge shorts

Trace the front on your fabric, and trace the back as normal but making sure the crotch seams stand out and trace the dotted lines on the image as shown. You will need more fabric and more curves for the back part.

Make a lounge set

You will need two front pieces, and two back pieces as shown.

How to make a two-piece lounge set

Assemble the shorts

Pair the front with the back and sew the inseam.

Sew a two-piece lounge set

Then, sew down the side only to where the curve starts, do not sew past this point. Also, repeat this step for the other leg.

With the right sides together, insert one leg into the other. Match up the inseam and sew along the entire crotch area.

Make the waistband

Cut a waistband that is twice the width of the elastic and sew the ends together.

How to make lounge shorts

Fold the waistband in half and attach it to the shorts with clips, as shown.

Sew lounge shorts

Next, sew all around to secure the waistband to the shorts. Make sure to leave an opening to feed through the elastic.

TIP-

One of my waistband panels was a little shorter, so all I did was stretch the waistband a little as I was sewing it on the shorts. Since the material is stretchy, this won’t really be noticeable.

Finally, thread the elastic through the waistband and sew the ends of the elastic together with a zigzag stitch. Also, sew down each flap so there’s no bulging.

Sew the opening closed and give the waistband a good tug so that the elastic distributes evenly.

Then, topstitch around the existing seam that connects the waistband to the shorts.

Add the bias tape

I am using a ¼ double-sided bias tape. The top fold is shorter than the bottom. With right sides together, line the shorter fold against the ends of the shorts.

Open up the tape and sew along the first bordered line.

TIP-

Try not to stretch the shorts while sewing

Remove any extra fabric to reduce building from inside the bias tape.

Fold the bias tape up, then fold it down twice on itself, so that it encases the raw edges of the shorts. The fold should now be on the wrong side of the shorts.

Next, stitch the bias tape all around, on the fold you just created.Make sure to smooth out the fabric and catch both sides of the bias tape.

Finally, close the side seam and finish all raw edges.

I hope you enjoyed this fun, women’s lounge shorts tutorial. I really love the bias trimming, it’s so delicate and gives a nice detailed edge to the whole look.
