This is one of my favorite loungewear sewing patterns. The cute, comfy pants can be made up as shorts or long pants.

For summer a cotton/linen blend is perfect and for winter, I'm going to make this in a warm knit fabric. It's a very easy outfit to sew and perfect for beginners.

Tools and materials:

  • Scissors
  • Ada pattern
  • Paper for pattern
  • Approx 3 yards of cotton or cotton knit fabric
  • 1 inch wide elastic
  • Pins
  • Sewing machine
  • Serger (optional)
Cutting out fabric pieces

1. Cut out fabric pieces

Print out the pattern pieces and tape them together if necessary.

Line up the pieces with the grain of the fabric - parallel to the selvedge edge if there is one.

Fabric pieces

2. Pockets

Lay out the fabric pieces, right sides up. Place the pocket linings on top of the front pants, matching the side seam notches.

Pin and sew the pockets to the front pant legs, taking a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

Pockets

Carefully clip about 3/8 inch into the V shape at the top of the seams. Press the seams to one side, fold the pockets to the inside and press.

For this project you should finish all the side seams with either pinking shears, a zigzag stitch or a serger.

Pockets

Lay the front pants pieces out, wrong side up, with the pocket linings on top.

Pin the pocket bags on top of the stitched pocket pieces and sew them along the curved edge, with a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

Sew the pockets to the side and waist seams taking a 1/4 inch seam allowance.

Side seams

3. Side seams

Pin the back pants pieces to the corresponding front pants at the side seams, with right sides together and matching the side seam notches.

Sew and finish the seams.

Crotch seam

4. Crotch seam

Turn one pants leg right side out and tuck it inside the other leg, so the right sides are touching each other.

Pin them together along the crotch seam, matching the notches, waist edges and seams. Sew them, with a 1/2 inch seam allowance.

Elasticated waist

5. Elasticated waist

Press the top edge of the waist to the inside by 1/2 inch, then fold again by 1.25 inches and press, enclosing the raw edge.

Sew close to the fold, stopping about 2 inches short of the end.

Attach a safety pin to one end of the elastic and feed it through the waistband.

Overlap the ends and sew them in place, then close the gap in the waistband.

Hemming pants

6. Hem pants

Turn 1/4 inch at the pants hem to the inside and press. Turn in another 1/2 inch and press. Sew in place close to the fold.

Sewing front and back

7. Sew front and back

Pin and sew the front and two back pieces together at the shoulders.

Join the center back seam, right sides together, matching the notches.

Neckline

8. Neckline

Sew the short edges of the neckband together. Matching all the notches around the neckline, pin the neckband to the neck edge, right sides facing.

Sew with a 1/4 inch seam allowance. Turn the band to the inside and press. Turn in a double hem, 1/4 inch plus 1/4 inch, and stitch.

Inserting sleeves

9. Insert sleeves

Matching the notch at the center of the sleeve head with the shoulder seam, pin and sew the sleeve into place.

Finish the edge and press the seam away from the sleeve.

Sewing side and sleeve seams

10. Sew side and sleeve seams

Pin and sew the side and sleeve seams, lining up the seams and edges.

Hemming edges

11. Hem edges

Turn in a double hem at the lower edge of the top, press and sew. Hem the sleeves in the same way.
