Tools and materials:
- Vintage doilies
- Old lounge pants
- Lace
- Old dress
- Loose fitting top
- Scissors
- Needle and thread
- Sewing machine
- Iron
1. Lounge pants knee patches
Grab a pair of old lounge pants and give them a bit of a refresh. All you need is 2 doilies and about 3 feet of lace. I recommend ironing the doilies first and foremost.
Put on your pants and look in the mirror to help decide the exact placement of the patches. Pin 1 in place and use it as a guide to pin the other.
You’ll need to hand stitch the doilies on unless you want to open up the side stitching of the pants to get them through the sewing machine.
I put a cutting in the pant leg to make sure my stitches wouldn’t go through the back layer of fabric.
Next, you can sew a bit of lace to the bottom hem. This will enhance the doilies and make the overall look more cohesive.
2. Put it on a dress
Add it to a lace dress. The two contrasting laces will add a funky element to the look. I placed mine right on the front of the dress, and I think it looks gorgeous.
3. Doily top
For this DIY upcycle you’ll need a whole bunch of doilies and a loose-fitting top. You’ll also need some pins and a sewing machine.
Lay out your loose-fitting top and a flat surface and then use it as a template to arrange your doilies. Arrange the doilies in the shape of the shirt.
Now pin them all together, and be patient because it’s a bit time-consuming, but it’s well worth it for the final result.
Stitch the doilies together with a tight wide zigzag stitch.
Once that’s done, repeat the process to create the back of your top. Then you can sew the 2 pieces together leaving openings for the head and arms.
