Today, we are going to try reverse hair washing. This is not anything new at all, it is something that has been done for a long time. However, I have personally never tried it, so I thought I’d give it a try and share the results.

Tools and materials:

  • Spray bottle
  • Deep conditioner
  • Amla oil
  • Plastic cap
  • Hair steamer
  • Shampoo
  • Hair mask
  • Leave-in conditioner
Spraying hair

1. Spray your hair

First, spray your hair evenly with water from the roots to the tips. You want your hair to be damp but not soaking wet.

Applying conditioner

2. Apply conditioner

Then apply a deep conditioner on your hair.

You can do this whether your hair is in twists or just out. Ensure you don’t have a lot of product build-up as this might prevent the deep conditioner from penetrating your hair shaft.

Applying oil

3. Apply oil

Now apply amla oil or whatever your favorite carrier oil is.

Focus it on the ends and the mid-shafts of your hair and then put a little bit on your hairline.

Allowing hair to dry

4. Dry your hair

Put on a plastic cap or a plastic bag and go under the heat for around 20 minutes. This will allow your hair to absorb all the nutrients and benefits from the deep conditioner.

Washing hair

5. Wash hair

Now wash your hair out in the shower with water.

Shampooing hair

6. Apply shampoo

Apply shampoo by evenly distributing it through your roots. Then rinse your hair out and apply shampoo a second time.

Lather it up on your scalp and use that lather to spread it to the rest of your hair. Because the rest of the hair is easier to clean it doesn't really need shampoo directly on it.

Now rinse your hair and apply shampoo a third time. Your hair should now be lathering much better than it was at the beginning. Then rinse out all of the shampoo so your scalp is clean and clear for the next product.

When washing my hair, I could feel the effects and the difference of using my deep conditioner before my shampoo. My hair feels a lot more moisturized and less dry than usual.

7. Apply leave-in hair mask

Section off your hair, then take a leave-in hair mask and apply a little bit of it to each section. At this point, I am also going to retwist any sections that got loose or came unraveled.

The reason that I wanted to do this reverse hair washing is because the hair mask needs to be left in and you also can’t use a deep conditioner after it.

Plus, you also don’t want to wash out all the benefits of the treatment. I wanted the benefits of a deep conditioner as well as the leave-in hair mask so reverse hair washing seemed like the perfect solution.

Drying hair

8. Dry your hair

Next, use the hair steamer for 10 minutes.

Applying leave-in conditioner

9. Apply leave-in conditioner

Apply a generous amount of leave-in conditioner on your hair, from the ends to the roots, and make sure that everything is perfectly absorbed.

I section my hair off into four and go section by section. When done, cover your hair and once again go under heat for another 20 minutes. Then let your hair air dry.

Completed reverse hair washing routine

Reverse hair washing

The big question is, am I going to continue doing the reverse washing after this time?

My answer is absolutely. I think everybody should try it at least once and see what you think of it. I think it is a good way of getting the most out of a hair mask. I saw a big difference. My scalp is very clean and moisturized and my hair looks shiny and healthy.
