How to Easily Create Rockabilly Hair Victory Rolls in 4 Different Ways

The victory roll is such a classic vintage look, so if you’re feeling victorious, follow along with this tutorial. I’m going to show you four ways to create rockabilly hair victory rolls, even if you have short or very long hair!
Tools and materials:
- Bobby pins
- Hairbrush or comb
- Teasing brush
- Hair pomade
- Hairspray
- Hair chignon
1. Prepping your hair
It is very hard to create victory rolls on freshly washed hair. Day-old hair will be much easier to manage and manipulate. It will also help if you have a little curl in your hair to begin with.
If your hair is already wanting to curl a bit, then you’re one step closer to a victory roll!
If you are just learning to do victory rolls, I recommend that you start with a side part in your hair. Then, you won’t have to worry about getting each side symmetrical as you would with a center part.
If you need to add some volume to your hair, start with a molding texturizer spray and apply it to the underside of your hair.
2. Victory rolls with no backcombing
Brush through your hair and take a section of hair from in front of your ear to the back of your side part.
Place your fingers from one hand against the section, about a third of the way down from your head, and wrap the hair around those fingers. Use your pointer finger from your other hand to help tighten the wrap.
Now finish rolling that first wrap into your head.
With one hand holding the roll, place a bobby pin right at the base of the roll. Now you should be able to remove your hand and keep the victory roll in place.
Use your hand to roll in any gaps and place another bobby pin to help close the first victory roll and keep it anchored.
With these two bobby pins placed, you can now use your hands to manipulate the victory into the exact shape and position you want.
Take a little pomade, smooth it over your fingers and smooth your fingers over the victory roll. Then apply hairspray to the roll.
3. Victory rolls with a filler
This method of creating a victory roll also doesn’t use any backcombing but it does use a hair chignon that you can buy from a beauty supply shop.
They come in a donut shape, and you will want to cut the donut, so you have one long chignon, and stitch the ends so it doesn’t fray.
Take a section of hair from the front of your eye towards the back of your part. Now, wrap your section of hair around the chignon starting at the end of your hair and rolling it up and in towards your head.
When the victory roll is snug to your head, use bobby pins to secure it at the front and back of the chignon.
Then, use your fingers to accordion the victory roll and pull it away from the chignon form at the front, to hide the chignon.
4. Victory rolls with backcombing
Backcombing will provide more volume to your victory roll and for beginners, it may be an easier way to make victory rolls.
Section your hair as you did before. Now, in two smaller sections, hold the front section of hair at an angle from your head and backcomb from about halfway down the section to your head.
Give the section of a spritz of hairspray underneath.
You can also backcomb the second section in the same way, but if you have frizz, you might choose to leave it alone for a smoother outside to the victory roll.
Hold both small sections and brush them together on the front, back, and to the ends so they are smooth.
Put two fingers near the end of the section and wrap your hair around those fingers, tucking in any strands.
Slide your fingers out and roll the section the rest of the way to your head. Bobby pin in to hold it place, using two to three pins.
5. Victory rolls for very long hair
This method will help you create a victory roll from very long hair. Create the same section as previously, divide it into two smaller sections and backcomb both sections.
Now place your fingers on the hair near your head and fold your hair over your fingers. Then roll and pin your hair as you did before.
If you need to cover a part line at the back of the section, just work the back of the roll a bit looser.
