Sexy Braid Tutorial: How to Make a Braid Look Thicker
Hi everyone. In this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make a braid look thicker.
Let's get started!
Tools and materials:
- Hair elastics
- Hair gel
- Hair brush
- Hairspray
- Braiding hair
- Topsy tail tool
We’ll be going from this thin braid.
To this thick braid ponytail.
1. Part your hair
Start by putting your hair into a middle part.
2. Apply gel and brush hair back into a ponytail
One product I like to use a lot for really sleek hairstyles is an agave nectar control gel. It provides a nice, slick hold without being sticky.
Apply the gel to your hair and then brush it back into a mid-head ponytail.
3. Spray hairspray
Spray hairspray on your hair to strengthen the hold.
4. Gather the hair you’ll need
To make the actual braided section, you’ll need jumbo braiding hair that you can get from any beauty supply store.
I used both light and dark brown 100% Kanekalon hair, since I wanted my braids to have swirls of two tones so it looks more real and natural.
5. Tie the hair tie around the braiding hair
Combine the two hair colors together and then bend them in half.
Take an elastic and place it underneath the strands. Pull the ends up on both sides to hold the hair and form two loops on either end.
Pull one loop through the other and tighten it.
It should form a singular loop.
6. Tie the loop around your ponytail
Use the new loop to attach it to your ponytail and tighten the elastic around your real ponytail as if you were just tying it up.
7. Hide the elastic with a topsy tail tool
Here’s a really cool trick to hide your elastic. You can do this even without extensions.
Take a section of the fake hair, or your hair if you’re not using extensions, and start wrapping it around the ponytail once or twice.
Then, insert the stick end of the topsy tail tool and wrap the hair around the tool.
Once you get to the end, thread it through the loop and pull the tool through the hair.
You don’t even need to secure this with a bobby pin. It’s totally secure and looks amazing.
8. Braid all the way down
Divide the hair into three equal sections and start braiding.
Ignore your own hair and braid it into the extensions.
Secure the ends with an elastic.
9. Widen the braid
To take it a step further and make the braid wider, gently pull on either side of the braid to widen it.
A word of caution: The wider the braid, the looser braid. It looks amazing, but if you have short hair, bits of hair are going to start sticking out.
I recommend widening the base and keeping the upper section tighter since you need the security.
