The Ultimate DIY Skirt From Shirt Tutorial - Get It Here

Have an old denim men’s shirt lying around? Perhaps your partner doesn’t wear his anymore, or your father is just about to discard his old unwanted shirts. Whatever or wherever it’s from, you can make a DIY skirt from a shirt in just a few steps! It’s surprisingly simple and great for beginners! I’m going to show you how to make a skirt from a man’s shirt the easy way, so let’s get this tutorial going, and be sure to keep on scrolling!
Tools and materials:
- Old, baggy denim shirt
- Ruler
- Sewing machine
- Matching thread
- Scissors
Measure and cut
Lay the shirt out and mark the center using a ruler and pencil. Make a dotted line across the whole width of the shirt.
Now, take a sharp pair of scissors and cut right across.
Make a distressed look
Now that you have a raw edge along the line where you cut, you can give your new skirt a distressed denim look. Do this by taking a kitchen grater and rubbing it across the raw edges, as shown.
Measure the pattern
For the skirt, you’ll need to follow a simple pattern and go by a few measurements, as shown. If your denim fabric is longer or bigger, make modifications by following the above measurements.
Draw and sew the darts
For the back panel of the dress, you'll need to make two darts on either side. Take your time to measure these carefully, making sure each dart is the same in length. They should be 1.18 x 5.9 inches. To see how I measured the darts, follow the video from 0:55 seconds.
To sew the darts, simply fold the triangle so that the middle line protrudes, pin the line, and sew accordingly.
You can also add more darts on either side if you want a more uniform look. This is totally optional, though.
Press down the seams when you're done.
Install buttons
Now you'll need to mark the desired area where you'd like to install your buttons. Ideally, it should be on either side of the left front panel.
Next, make corresponding buttonholes on the same location of the buttons, but this time, on the front right panel.
Install the metal buttons on your marks, as shown. If you want to see how to attach a metal/jean button, see my video tutorial here.
There you go, you now have a fun and playful denim wrap skirt made from scratch. Isn't this an amazing upcycle? This skirt made from shirts is so chic! Also, as we know, denim is a classic, timeless fabric that never gets old, so recreating a skirt from a denim shirt is the perfect project because you will be able to wear this skirt for a really long time. Plus, it matches up with just about any other accessory or top. I think it would also be hard to know that the skirt was in fact, a shirt! Thanks for joining me on this DIY skirt from shirt tutorial!
