How to Make a Suspender Skirt Easily Out of Any Old Skirt
In this DIY, I’m going to show you a clothing upcycle. It’s a pretty simple, basic idea, and it’s a way that you can turn any type of skirt into a suspender skirt. If you’ve always wanted to know how to make a suspender skirt—or, as I like to call it, a jumper—this is for you.
Tools and materials:
- Skirt
- Fabric (with some stretch to it)
- Measuring tape
- Scissors
- Sewing machine
- Pins
1. Take and mark measurements
Take the measurement from your shoulder to your waist; for me, this was about 16 inches (40.6cm). I’m going to make it a little bit longer so I can have some wiggle room so I will round it up to 18 inches (45.7cm).
Fold the fabric in half and mark this measurement on the fabric. You need to double the length, so I am measuring down 18 inches on the fold so that I’ll have a front and back piece.
2. Cut the straps
Proceed to cut the straps. The two straps ended up being about 3 inches (7.6cm) wide and 36 inches (91.4cm) long.
3. Sew the long side
Fold the straps in half lengthways with the good sides touching each other, then stitch along the long side. You can pin the side down before sewing if this will help you.
4. Turn inside out
Once both pieces are sewn, flip them inside out. It might take a little while to do this.
5. Pin the straps on
When you’ve finished your two straps, put your skirt on and eyeball where you want the straps to go. Then pin them into place.
I liked the idea of having a criss-cross at the back. I also thought this would be a good idea to help the straps stay up and not fall off of my shoulders.
6. Sew
Sew them into place, and do it so that the seams are hidden under the top of the skirt.
Here is the finished look!
