Did you know you can refashion a pair of pants? There are so many ways to transform clothes, and in this tutorial, I’m going to show you how to make a mini wrap skirt. I used a pair of old, classic-style checkered pants for this tutorial. To make this transformation, you can use any old pair of pants, or better yet, find one from a thrift store. This beautiful mini wrap skirt is also simple, with only a few tools and materials required. Are you ready? Let’s start this easy mini wrap skirt tutorial.

Tools and materials:

  • Pair of pants
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Sewing machine
  • 2 buttons

Cut the pants

First thing’s first- cut the pants off. Do this by folding your pants in half, and measure the length you’d like to cut off. For the best results, measure yourself and see what length would be most suitable for your height.

Now, cut the pants off, as shown.

Now, cut the inseams of the crotch area; like this, you’ll open up the whole area.

Cut, cut, cut!

Turn the piece inside out and pin one side all the way down. Then, cut alongside the pins to take off any excess fabric. These pants were big for me, so I had to make adjustments. When you’re done with that, sew the edges together.

Now, cut around the zipper area to open up the fabric completely.

Then, cut out the zipper entirely, cut off the whole strip starting from the bottom of the fabric.

Cut the other edge of the dress. You will need to get rid of the zipper-shaped curve on the edge.

How to make a mini wrap skirt

Take one of your pant legs that you cut off and open it at the seams.

Line the fabric so that the printed lines match up. Then, mark the edges where you’ll need to trim. Then, with a sharp pair of scissors, trim off the excess. In my case, I cut the bottom so that it lines up with the skirt piece. Also, cut the piece in half so that you have two pieces.

For the top, simply fold the fabric over. As you can see, the rest of the skirt has a top lining folded over, so to keep it uniform, I did the same with the other piece. Sew the edge to create a fold, too.

Assemble the mini wrap skirt

With the right sides facing, lay both pieces on either side of the bigger piece. Cut the bottoms if needed, just to make sure everything lines up evenly. Now, sew the side seams.

Next, make a double fold on either side of the mini wrap skirt and sew. Also, don’t forget to hem the skirt for a nice, finished look.

Add buttons

You’ll need to add buttonholes on the front panel and buttons on the layer right behind it. So, fold your skirt and mark with pins where each buttonhole and button will be placed.

Manually sew two buttons on either side of the first layer.

Then sew buttonholes on the top layer, making sure the placement of these buttonholes matches up and corresponds to the location of the buttons.

Talk about an elegant and sexy mini wrap skirt! How stunning does this look? If you didn’t know about this transformation, I doubt you would have guessed that this women’s mini wrap skirt was, once upon a time, a pair of old pants! I love these transformations; they make for a good upcycle. I hope you have fun making this check wrap mini skirt. Enjoy!

Clever idea! I wish the plaid pieces could have lined up a bit better in the front, then I could believe it was the original garment and not a reconstruction. Is it pulling a little in the front because it needed some darts in the back at the waist?

I love that you didn't leave the crotch curve in the front and just tack it down. I've seen too many denim jeans to skirt transformations that do that. Why make a skirt if it looks like chopped up pants? YOU have the right idea!

  • hello, thank you ! for nice comment and yes , I was so excited to publish it that I had added darts later when video was already published, now skirt looks perfect :-)
