Hi everyone! Today, I’m going to be showing you how to make this beautiful and simple satin midi skirt. This skirt has a double-sided slit, which I personally love! But, if that’s not your preference, you can simply go without it. You can find the link to this midi skirt sewing pattern here.

Now, without further ado, let’s jump into this easy sewing tutorial.

Tools and materials:

  • Satin fabric
  • Scissors
  • Measuring tape
  • Thread and needle
  • Sewing machine
  • Iron
  • Bias Tape
  • Elastic
Sewing the front and back pieces together

1. Sew the front and back pieces together

Start off by placing the right sides of the front and the back fabric together.

Then, using a needle and thread, stitch the front and the back fabric together and stop at the side slip notch. This is to prevent the fabric from moving around as it’s a bit slippery.

Repeat the same step on the other side of the skirt.

Stitching down the sides

2. Stitch sides down

After you’ve finished sewing it down, use your sewing machine to stitch the sides down using a ¾ inch seam allowance.

When you reach the side slip notch, you need to backstitch.

Ironing out wrinkles

You can use an iron here to remove any wrinkles in the fabric.

Folding fabric edge down

3. Fold the fabric edge down

After you’ve finished ironing everything down, fold the edge of the fabric down using a ¾ inch seam allowance. Then, iron it all the way down.

Folding the edge again

4. Fold and iron

After folding it, take a tape measure and check that it’s ¾ inch.

Then, the next step is to fold the edge again, inwards, to hide the rough edges of the fabric. Iron it down and repeat the same step on the remaining three sides.

Adding hemming tape

5. Add hemming tape

Next, you're going to need your hemming tape. Take the measurements of the length of the side slit, cut the tape, then fold the edge of it and tuck it in between the fabric. Press it down with your iron.

After pressing it down, you should have a neat side slit. Repeat the same step on the other side of the fabric.

Preparing the elastic

6. Prepare the elastic

Now, we move on to the elastic band. Bring the ends of the band together so they overlap. Then, with half an inch seam allowance, sew the ends together using a zigzag stitch.

Pinning the elastic

After this, you fold the elastic band in half and pin both sides. Then fold again, with the two previously pinned sides in the center. Then pin the edges again so, all together, you have four pinned edges.

7. Add the elastic band

To attach elastic to the midi skirt waist, see video 6.31 - 7.30.

Stitching elastic down

Now, fold the elastic band inwards, pin it down, then go in with your sewing machine again and create a stitch at the side seam to hold the elastic band in place.

8. Create the hem

To create the hem, clip the corners.

Then fold it twice using a ¼ inch seam allowance on each fold. Hem the bottom.
