Today I have for you the easiest, softest, and most wearable soft winged eyeliner. I've gone for a winged liner but you can absolutely do this without the wing, this is more just to show you how soft it can be and how easy the method is. Whether you are 16 or 86, you can definitely apply this method.

Tools and materials:

  • Angled liner brush
  • Eyeliner
  • Sharpener
  • Mascara
  • False lashes
Adding color to lash line

Sharpen your pencil, then take an angled liner brush and run the bristles along the eyeliner to coat them. Then look down into a mirror, place the brush at the root of your eyelashes on the outer edge first and start pulling the color upwards. You want to pull from the lash line up to create that soft finish.

Applying soft winged eyeliner

If you drag the brush from left to right, you will create more of a solid line which is exactly what we want for the wing. Doing the left-to-right motion creates more of a defined finish. But we want a soft finish along the root of the eyelashes so there you need to pull the color upwards.

Taking the brush to corner of the eye

Use the very tip of the bristles on the inner corner of the eye and just work it backward and forward very softly. Use a really light hand to almost stamp the color on because this is the area that you want it to be the thinnest. You could have a little cotton bud or a q-tip to hand so that if you do do a left or right swiping motion and it looks too harsh, you can just use your cotton bud over the top to soften it.

As you can see on my left eye in the picture when I look straight on it's so soft but it is there. Go for a long-wearing eyeliner as generic eyeliners do tend to smudge throughout the day, they are soft they usually need setting in place but this one does not move. I've opted for a brown because I find it to be the softest flattering shade. You can adjust the depth of brown depending on your skin tone or even go for black.

If your eyes are slightly differently shaped from one another, you just need to adjust the shape slightly on either eye. Most people's eyes are sisters, not twins and so they’re not identical. You can also go back in with the eyeliner once your mascara is on to even them up.

When drawing a winged eyeliner a rule of thumb is that the trajectory of your wing is to follow on from the lower eyelash line. The higher you go, the more lifted the eye will look. I prefer not to go too high because I like a bit more of an almond shape.

This is how it looks with a little coat of mascara. Mascara makes the actual lash line itself look a little bit fuller because it creates a shadow behind the lashes.

And then again if you pop on some eyelashes you can still see that really soft smoky wing behind. It's very subtle but it's still very softly visible from behind.

Hi Shonagh, First I want to thank you for addressing color and tone for both younger and older eyes. Your tutorial is wonderful and please keep up the good work. You gave the name of the liner but didn't give the name of the mascara you used. It is incredible because it lengthened your already lovely natural lashes without looking gooped up. Sometimes as we age our eyelashes thin out and are not how they were when we were younger. You also addressed the fact that one side of our body is different than the other and how to correct the "off" side. I have only one suggestion if you don't mind, when you list your supplies, please list the product name / color so that there is a guide for us to use to purchase or get as close to the one you used as possible. Thank you for sharing your instructions and taking the time to answer.

Hi Again Shonagh, I went to your You Tube video and no mention of the mascara you used. So, me being me I looked at a few of your videos thinking there would be a mention of the one used in this tutorial and I found you used two different mascaras. Could you please give me the name of the mascara you used here? Thank you so much :)
