Hey, guys! Today, I’m going to show you my step-by-step curly hair routine using only one styling product. If you want to know how to get more volume in curly hair, or you’re just on the hunt for curly hair techniques, keep reading!

Tools and materials:

  • Curling custard
  • Cotton shirt or microfiber towel
  • Claw clip
  • Diffuser (optional)
  • Hair oil
Applying curling custard

1. Rake a curling custard through soaking wet hair

I always start with dripping, soaking wet hair, and, in this natural curly hair routine, I’m going with styling with a curling custard.

To apply, rub it between your hands and then rake it through your hair. Raking is going to distribute the product evenly throughout all of your hair. I do this about twice.

Praying hands method

2. Apply the custard with the praying hands method

Then, take the curling custard between your hands again and do the praying hands method to clump your curls back together. This will create bigger, juicy curly clumps instead of small, separated curls.

Scrunching hair

3. Scrunch

Rub any leftover product between your hands and really gently start to scrunch. When you get up to your scalp, pulse your fists to let out any water that your hair is still holding onto.

Flipping hair

4. Flip your hair and remove frizz

Flip your hair over to the side and release those curls from your scalp in the back.

Scrunching hair

Take a little bit more product and rub it over the spots where you see frizz, then scrunch again, being super gentle.

Flip your hair over to the other side and do the exact same thing. Using one styling product for your wash day is going to decrease the amount of time you’re spending styling your hair.

It’s going to decrease the amount of time your hair takes to dry, and it’s going to give you volume, so your curls turn out looking really natural and soft, and just beautiful.

Plopping hair with t-shirt

5. Plop

Then, plop your hair with a cotton t-shirt or a microfiber towel for about 15 minutes.

Scrunching water from hair

6. Scrunch out the remaining water

After those 15 minutes are up, take out the plop and just scrunch out the last of the water that your hair is still holding on to.

Again, be really gentle as you scrunch. You can go ahead and flip your hair over to the side to get your curls laying the way you want them as you scrunch out the water and repeat on the other side.

Clipping hair back

7. Clip the top section of your hair back

Next, flip your hair back and use a small claw clip to pin up the top section.

This is going to create lift and volume on the top and it also keeps your hair out of your face while air drying.

I like to air dry until I feel the crunch gel cast forming, and once I feel that I’ll either diffuse or continue air drying.

Diffusing hair dry

8. Diffuse or air dry

If you diffuse, go ahead and use your diffuser to dry your hair.

Massaging roots

If you decide to air dry, once you feel the crunchy cast, take out the claw clip and flip your part from side to side every so often.

Massage your roots to make sure there aren’t any curls sticking to your scalp. This is going to create a ton of volume when air drying.

Applying hair oil

9. Apply hair oil

Once your hair is totally dry, use hair oil to scrunch out the crunch. Take three drops and smooth them over your hair.

This is going to reduce frizz and add moisture and shine to your hair. This step isn’t totally necessary, but I see a big difference in my hair when I do it.

Scrunching oil into ends

Then, take a little bit more oil and scrunch it into your ends. If your hair is on the frizzier side, I suggest you skip this step and just smooth it in instead of scrunching.

Fluffing roots

10. Fluff your roots

Finally, flip your head over and fluff up your roots to add even more volume.
