Follow Along to Create Gorgeous, Flowy Pants for Summer

Here’s an easy pants sewing pattern you can sew with just 1.25 yards (1 m) of fabric to make flowy pants for summer.

They are 37 inches (92 cm) long from waist to hem. You will need more fabric to make longer pants.

It’s a simple project that even beginners can tackle.

I used a soft polyester fabric to make mine and the measurements I give are for size 38 European.

Add half an inch (1 cm) at each side for every larger size or deduct 1 inch (2.5 cm) from each measurement for a smaller size.

The contrast panels should be a similar weight fabric to the main pants.

Tools and materials:

  • 1.25 yards (1 m) of 48 inch (124 cm) wide fabric
  • 2 strips of contrast fabric, 40 inches (1 m) long
  • 2 inch (5 cm) wide elastic
  • Fabric marker
  • Measuring tape
  • Ruler
  • Pins
  • Scissors
  • Sewing machine
  • Serger (optional)
Fabric

1. Cut out the basic shape

Cut your fabric into two pieces, each 24 inches (62 cm) wide by 40 inches (100 cm) long.

Place them together with the right sides facing and the long edges towards you.

Measurements

Fold the two pieces in half again lengthways, keeping the fold closest to you.

Measuring the fabric

Measure 15 inches (38 cm) down the length of the fabric from the right edge and draw a line across it.

Marking the fabric

Measure 8.25 inches (21 cm) from the fold along the right edge and draw a line straight down to meet the first line.

Marking the fabric

Draw a curve at the corner where the two lines meet.

Marking the fabric

Measure 11 inches (28 cm) from the fold along the left edge.

Measuing the fabric

Draw a line from that point to the end of the first line.

Cutting the fabric

Cut out the basic pants shape.

Cut along the fold to separate the pants into four pieces, two fronts and two backs.

Side inserts

2. Side inserts

Cut two strips of contrast fabric each 4.75 inches (12 cm) wide by 40 inches (100 cm) long.

Adding the side inserts

With the right sides together, pin and sew one contrast panel over the straight edge of one of the front pieces.

Adding the side inserts

Open out the seam and place one of the back pieces on top, with the right sides facing.

Adding the side inserts

Pin and sew the free edge of the panel to the outside edge of the back piece.

Join the other front and back sections in the same way.

Shaping the front waistband

3. Shape the front waistband

Place the two joined sections together with the right sides facing.

Measure 2 inches (5 cm) down the front crotch seam.

Draw a line tapering to the back crotch seam.

Shaping the front waistband

Cut along the line.

Trim half an inch (1 cm) from the inner front leg seam.

4. Assemble the pants

Pin and sew the center front and center back crotch seams.

Assembling the pants

Refold the pants with the seams in the center and sew the inner leg seams.

Finish all the raw edges with your serger or using an overlock or zigzag stitch on your machine.

Elasticated waist

5. Elasticated waist

Cut a length of elastic 25.5 inches (65 cm) long or to fit comfortably around your waist.

Overlap the ends and sew them securely together.

Elasticated waist

Turn the pants right side out.

Mark four equal divisions on the elastic and the waist edge of the pants.

Elasticated waist

With the elastic seam at the center back, pin the elastic inside the waist edge at the four points. Match the top edge of the elastic with the waist edge.

Sewing the elasticated waist

Sew the elastic in place, stretching it between the four points as you sew.

Finish the raw edge of the waist.

Sewing the elasticated waist

Fold the elastic to the inside.

Sewing

Sew the same edge to the inside of the pants, stretching it evenly as you did before so that the elastic remains flat and the seams align.

Sewing

6. Lower hem

Turn up a single hem at the bottom of each leg and sew in place.
