How to Make a Cute DIY Turtleneck for Fall Out of an Old Bedsheet

In this tutorial, I'll show you how to make a turtleneck. Use stretchy fabric to make your own DIY turtleneck sweater and save the DIY turtleneck pattern so you can make lots more in different colors! You’ll love how comfortable this turtleneck is and it's so perfect for fall!
Tools and materials:
- Jersey fabric or bedsheet
- Brown paper
- Scissors
- Sewing pins
- Thread
- Sewing machine
1. Cut out turtleneck pattern pieces
A stretchy jersey bed sheet makes a great piece of fabric for my DIY turtleneck sweater. Watch this video to learn how to make the turtleneck sewing pattern using your own measurements.
Cut out fabric pieces according to the pattern. If you want your finished turtleneck sweater to be a boxier style, then you can add 2 centimeters (0.78 inches) to the sides of each pattern piece.
2. Sew the turtleneck sweater shoulders
Open the front and back pieces and pin them together at the shoulders with right sides facing in. Sew the shoulder seams.
3. Attach the sleeves
Open the turtleneck sweater and lay it flat on your work surface, right side facing up.
With right sides facing in, pin each shoulder into a turtleneck sweater armhole. Sew the armhole seams.
4. Sew the turtleneck sweater bodice
With right sides facing in, pin the sides of the front bodice piece to the back bodice piece. Now pin the inside sleeve seams together.
On each side of the turtleneck sweater, you can now sew the inside sleeve and bodice side in one continuous seam.
5. Now for the turtleneck collar
First, measure the circumference of your head and make sure your turtleneck collar piece can stretch to that size so you will easily be able to pull your turtleneck sweater over your head.
Fold the turtleneck collar piece in half widthwise, right sides facing in, and pin the open edge together. Sew the turtleneck collar seam.
Now fold the turtleneck collar in half lengthwise, with the right side facing out. Pin the turtleneck collar to the neckline of the sweater with right sides facing.
Sew the collar into place.
6. Hem the bottom of the turtleneck sweater
For best results on stretchy fabric, sew the hems using a twin needle, on the right side of the fabric. Be careful to not pull the fabric as you are sewing. You can watch my video on tips for sewing with stretch fabric for more information.
7. Add cuffs to the sleeves
Fold each cuff piece in half widthwise and sew the open seam. Now, just as you did with the collar, fold the cuffs in half lengthwise, turn them right side out, and pin them to the bottom of the sleeves with right sides facing. Sew the cuffs in place.
How to make a turtleneck tutorial
This DIY turtleneck sweater is so easy to make you can have one to match everything in your wardrobe! With the nicely finished hem you can either tuck it on or wear it untucked, and because it’s made of soft jersey fabric, it’s incredibly comfortable and will fit you beautifully.
