Testing Tiktok Hacks: Do These Viral Trends Actually Work?
I’m putting some viral TikTok hair hacks that everyone has been trying and talking about to test so you don’t have to! In this tutorial, I will test out TikTok hair hack for a thick ponytail, faux Dutch braids, a quick blowout, and a hack to get voluminous hair! So, follow along and let me do the testing for you!
Tools and materials:
- Hair elastics
- Blow dryer
- Hair crimper (Spoiler alert: don’t go buy one!)
- Hair pins
- Spray hair heat protectant
- Hair teaser brush (optional)
1. TikTok hack to make your ponytail look thicker
This TikTok video hack got over 38 million views, and now I’ll test it out.
For this hack, make a half ponytail at the top of the back of your head.
Now split the loose part of your hair into 2 sections. Pull the 2 sections up over the top ponytail, and secure them together with a ponytail holder above the half-pony.
Here is my ponytail before the TikTok hack.
Here it is after testing the hack. I don’t think it makes much difference, and it feels kind of weird on my head. Also, I worry that if the wind blows, the 2 ponytails will look distinct.
My verdict on this hairstyle hack? FAIL.
2. TikTok hack for a faux Dutch braid
Part your hair down the middle in the back. Split each side of your hair into 2 ponytails – top and bottom – so you have 4 ponytails in total. Braid the top ponytails using a simple three-strand braid.
When the top braid reaches the top of your bottom ponytail, tie off the braid.
Pull the bottom ponytail into a loose bun near the ponytail holder.
Twist the rest of your bottom ponytail, and then wrap the twist around the loose bun. Tuck the end of the wrap into the bun to secure it.
Open the hole in your last braid with your fingers, and pull the lower bun through that hole.
Twist and wrap any of the bun that came loose and pin the bun to secure it.
Loosen the 3-strand braid to make it look thicker.
Here’s the finished faux Dutch braid. My verdict on this hack? I LOVE IT!
3. TikTok hack for a quick blowout
If your blow dryer has attachments, use the one similar to the image above.
Apply heat protectant to your hair.
Split your hair into two sections, and tightly twist one section around your fingers.
Blow dry the twist, holding the blow dryer quite close to your hair.
Repeat on the other side.
After blow drying, let your hair rest for about 5 minutes and then brush through your hair with your fingers.
My hair had a bit of curl before doing this quick blow-out hack, and I don’t think this hack made much difference. Certainly, no more difference than my curling iron would make.
My verdict on this hack? It was a FLOP.
4. TikTok hack for voluminous hair
Lift a small section of your hair, and use a hair crimping tool to crimp small sections at the top of the hair that is underneath the section you lifted. Hold the crimper on each section for 5 to 8 seconds.
Repeat lifting and crimping underneath all around your head and then flip the lifted hair back down so it covers the crimped hair.
I couldn’t really see any difference between the side I volumized with this TikTok hack and the side I didn’t.
So, I tried using a teasing brush on the un-hacked side of my hair.
And it looks much more volumized than the side I tested the volumizing hack on. Plus, you can’t see any crimping.
My verdict on this hack? Save the money you would spend on a crimper, because this hack is a FAIL.
Testing TikTok hacks for hair
In the end, only 1 of the 4 viral TikTok hair hacks passed my test. I would love to hear if you decided to try any of these TikTok hacks yourself and agree with my hack-testing verdicts. Please leave a comment to let me know!
Or, just leave a comment to let me know if my hair hack testing saved you some time, so you didn’t have to try them out for yourself.
